Yamaha original Maple Custom kit - Is it worth it??

Hey folks! Yesterday was a pretty rock n' roll drive from Montreal to Pickering and back. I still don't have a studio so I couldn't set up the drums. (As you know I lost my previous jam space, due to a fire) so they'll have to stay in their cases for a couple of days. I still wanted to take them out of their cases and I took pics so you could take a look!! Unfortunately I can't seem to attach the pictures to my post! The format isn't working even in the smallest format (weird).

The drums are in mint condition and look really good!! I can't wait to try them! I'm now considering, if I find a good match, to get a snare with the same finish, or maybe just go with something completely different.

I'll still try and post the pictures I took and show them to you asap! I feel super lucky to have found them, and the guy selling them seemed to really have cared for them. You could tell he was relieved I had brought cases to carry the drums in them... He was apparently going for a nice birch set (Gretsch I believe!)

Thank you all again for your enthusiasm and participation.. Like Gadd once said, "We're all in this together!":) Long live Drummerworld and you all.

Cheers :)

Ahhhh?!?! The bass drum picture got ruined!! ;-)

Aha! IT WORKED! YES(s)!

Those are (appear to be) aluminum die cast hoops on the toms, can tell by the radius on the ears, my MC natural came with them too.

You can confirm with a magnet, plus they're really light weight. No rust ever with those, a big plus.

This kit should be guaranteed to appreciate in value with age.

Well toubet, judging from the pics, I'd have to agree.
Those look like in almost new condition, like they were well taken care of, and like they were a stay at home kit.
Did you get them for the price listed in the first post?

Les - not sure about the rims, but you would know better about that series than me.
toubet's rims look like a heavier flanged version to me.

I recently got a MCAN that wasn't well taken care of. It has aluminum die cast hoops.
And while they don't rust, they are subject to pitting. Steel will rust if the chrome flakes. Chromed aluminum gets pitting.
Easy enough to avoid if you keep them clean, keep a coat of wax on them, and dry them off if they get wet.

If those are die cast, they must have changed the forms.
The main area of visual difference is the area around where the tension rods go through.
Here's a pic for comparison:

The hoops on the OP's kit are called Power Hoops. Except for the 16'' tom, those look regular hoops.

Power Hoops are 3.0 die-cast, but with the shape of Dyna hoops/Triple flanged hoops.

When the Absolute series came out they changed to regular die-cast hoops.

-edit-

Its Power, not Super ;)

Ya - I know Pearl makes Super Hoops. Something didn't sound right there.

Nice graph.

It shows the steel as 'roll forming', the aluminum power hoops as 'Yamaha original forming',
and aluminum (non-power hoop) and zinc as 'die cast'.

Good choice, I've had mine about 25 years now and wouldn't be without them. The shells have improved more with age I'm sure, it's hard to tell when you live with something but I'm sure they sound less pingy, more tonal and easier to tune.

I have to agree with this. I've had mine for quite some years now too and shudder at the thought that I considered selling it at one point. I believe they're sounding warmer. Sure - it may be my ear, may be my tuning is better, but I actually believe it's true.

Hi All!

I've tried using a magnet to check if the rims are in aluminium, and I can assure you that there was no "attraction". So I guess that confirms that they are not in aluminium?

One thing I can tell you for sure is that the toms are pretty heavy :)

And yes, for sure the 16" floor tom appears to have different hoops than the rest!

I am still actively looking for a new jam space with my band! I really want to try them soon.

They're aluminum. A magnet 'will not' stick to aluminum, and when you take them off you'll notice how light they are compared to steel. Your 16 rims will probably hold a magnet.

I have the same hoops on my MC's.

Hello everyone,

It's been almost a year since the adventure of me and my friend driving out to the province of Ontario here in Canada to pick up this wonderful kit!

I promised to give you feedback once I'd set it up. I hadn't mentioned this at the time, but I had to take a break from the band I was playing in at the time. My daughter who's now 11 months old had just been born, and between a new job and my new status as a dad, I just couldn't juggle all the responsibilities at the same time. Finally, and it wasn't planned out clearly, we decided it was time for me to rejoin the ranks.

I was itching to setup the new kit and try it out, and let me tell it was well worth the wait.

Those drums sound beautiful, super melodic and FAT! I almost didn't have to tune them at all. I didn't take the time to pad the bass drum either, and it still sounds great, open sound but still with a nice attack. The drummer who had sold them to me had set them up with Evans G2 drumheads for toms and I think G3 for the bass drum. I usually go with Remo Emperor for toms and Ambassador for the snare.

The cymbals on the photos are: Zildjian 14" K Hi-Hats, Zildjian K Custom Session Crash 18" Gadd (Signed Model), Paiste 2002 Heavy Ride 20", Zildjian 18" China Boy.

That's it for now! Sorry it took so long, and thanks again for your interest.

The bandmates were very pleased with my return, and bringing this beautiful drum set to the table didn't hurt at all :)

Cheers, have a great weekend.

Here are a few pictures of the new kit.
