Are you a drum person or a cymbal person

Cymbals. Crap drums can sound good, crap cymbals are, 99% of the time, going to sound like crap.

Besides, nothing more satisfying to the ears than the sound of a beautiful cymbal. Can't be beat.

I second that viewpoint.
After checking my gear closet, there's a 7:1 ratio of cymbals to snare drums.

I spend more money on cymbals, but I spend more time on drums. Whatever that tells you. I would rather work with wood and build drums than work with metals and make cymbals. Whatever that tells you.

Well I'm bringing the sticks, brushes, and rutes. Cause you need them to play either. We can bargain like Cutthroat Kitchen I'll trade you one stick for snare?

From years of playing in practice spaces where I might be using another band's kit (due to space issues not allowing everyone to bring their kits in) I can definitely deal with a mediocre drum kit as long as I have nice cymbals (and my own pedal too) whereas a really nice kit with crap cymbals would bug me - like fingernails on chalkboard.
