The legendary Steve Gadd

I remember reading an article once in MD probably at least 40 years ago now. It was about a dozen or so different top drummers of the day and how one could develop their technique and how to play like they do...or something like that. Anyway, each drummer had a rather lengthy piece written about them and their playing. The very last drummer in the article was Gadd and all it said was...Get your chops up! 🤣

Every once in awhile I go to see an artist and Gadd just happens to be the drummer (ie James Taylor, Paul Simon...). That is a very welcome added bonus.

"I can't seem to find something SO speacial about this guy. overrated imo."
It is OK sir....for you to have your own opinion.
I personally.....Love that man's playing...and have found his playing magical and very hard to figure out ....at first.
Just find drummers that speak to you. Don't worry about others opinions.
BUT......you have a hard road to travel....with your opinion...on most drum forums. Good Luck Sir.
BTW........who do YOU like?

Hard to argue with Gadd being great, but one thing he did that wasn’t was filling in on Late Night With David Letterman when Steve Jordan quit. He started the theme way too slow, and he hit very lightly. Not every song was that off the mark, but they were more of a rock band with a hard hitting drummer and Steve just wasn’t right for it.

Dennis Chambers played in a Trio (Niacin) and one of the guys had family in the town next to me..
So this Trio played in a local bar and I went to see them.
The bar (end) was roped off where Dennis was sitting during a break and I went up to say Hi and start a chat.
For some reason I can't recall I asked Dennis "who's the highest paid drummer" these days and he turned looked at me and said "Steve Gadd".

Throwback Thursday with Steve Gadd

One of my views during the handful of consecutive nights I saw him with Chick at the Blue Note in NYC.
