Some drum porn

Newest acquisition today - it was one of those “too good to be true prices”, so I had to do it. I may flip them after fixing them up a bit, or I may keep them. I’ve missed having a 4-piece on steroids.

1980 Ludwigs in silver sparkle wrap: 10x14/16x18/16x26

The rack tom needs some TLC on a split seam, and some of the spur mounts are stripped (easy to replace). The floor tom is a slightly different shade of silver sparkle, but I doubt anyone would care. This kits gonna be fun!

Nice kit!!

Must sound HUGE.
they will. I currently have them in pieces doing little fixes. It’ll get new heads and then I’ll play them. I must be OCD because every used kit I find, the heads get tossed and replaced. I never assume the previous owner can tune and that the heads might be all bent out of shape 😉

Not sure why the Ludwig logo is so big, so that front head definitely has to go!

Nice score. Looks like there was a rail consolette, at some time, on the bass drum.

Nice score! Silver sparkle is timeless and as a lefty, there will definitely be a Ian Paice vibe to it !
Funny to have a previous consolette plus a Tom mount, on a 26”.

Definitely a players kit over the years. Difficult to know what was on there first, but the shell seems structurally sound - all the bearing edges are nice and flat, and I've started to glue down some lifting edges on the wrap. It will never look catalog new, but I think the vibe will be correct. Now I'm off to find a Zeppelin tribute band to join ;)

First thing I thought of was Deep Purples Made in Japan cover with Ian's monster sized one up two down silver sparkle kit. Silver sparkle...one of the all time coolest wraps.

I like that over the top logo head!

I have a couple of early 2000's Ludwig kits and they both have big logos like that. I'm not a fan, either. I'll just buy an ebony head and apply an aftermarket logo to it. Simple.

I've never played a 26" bass drum before. I'm almost afraid to, because after going up to a 24" I thought "wow, now that's really nice..." I can only imagine if I did play a 26, I'd have to have add one to the arsenal.

They indeed "up the ante". I've had four 26's, over the years. I kept the Ludwig 3 ply. I have two 24's right now (Slingerland and Gretsch). Love those big drums.;)

You’d end up playing them a lot more provided you have a car you can fit it in 😉

Funny story: I think I knew why he was selling. We met at a gas station, and the guy pulls in with a little Toyota Tacoma truck with the drums in the back. When I transferred them to my Dodge RAM truck, they all fit in the back seat of my quad cab - negating needed cases 😉

Yeah, if I had a 26 I couldn't imagine playing more than what Bonham used. My Chester Thompson-esque setup with two 24" basses and seven toms fills pretty much every inch of available space I have in the car. Big drums are great to play, but it's the getting them to the gig that's the challenge.

That and rack Tom placement. Holy moley!
