Jim Riley here: Nashville Number System Book + Signature Snare

Re: Nashville Number System

I think it's more than just that - I read the Jim Riley Modern Drummer article about the Nashville Number, he explain pretty much in details.

BTW, here's Jim "Lips of an Angel" charted with the Nashville Numbers

Would you please explain the circled items, "pre" and "ch"? Also the Roman numerals - are those chords, or song structure like AABA or ???

I'm so glad C&W musicians around here finally went to the number system. I knew what the numbers themselves meant back in the 80s, but some of the locals scoffed at that system and had fancy hand signals for specific chords (three fingers up = 3 sharps) or shouted them out on stage "dog" for D etc. The same people called the bridge the "chorus" and the chorus the "bridge." Very chaotic...NNS is more involved nowadays and a guy who was always into numbers told me he blew an audition for not knowing what a double diamond was.

Hey Jim!!

Pleasure to hear from you - I was just on your website, is your signature snare the one you used on the recordings on your website or is that a different one? I've always been a huge fan of all the snares Ludwig has to offer so I'm really eager to hear how your new signature snare sounds. Best of luck to you!

Hi Mr. Riley. Hope to see you in Indianapolis on your Sam Ash clinic. Guess I'll get to hear the new snare there, eh?

Re: Jim Riley here: Nashville Number System

Hi Jim

Good to see you here at the forum - very welcome.

I remember very well your clinic in Austin - Pasic, where you explained the Nashville-Number-System.

...and i was deeply impressed by your great and powerful drumming.

Was so nice to meet you there and hope there will be a chance soon to meet again(...and also Todd Trent)

I wrote "The Nashville Number System for Drummers" book and CD in 1999. It's available through my drum shop GeorgesDrumShop.com or Fork's Drum Closet. Dealers can order it through Universal Percussion. It was reviewed in Modern Drummer. The Nashville Number System is basically the solfege system; do, re, mi but uses numbers instead of syllables. There is nothing that pertains to the drums per se. It is basically a lead sheet with chord changes and other cues but written with numbers instead of notes so that it can be read in any key.

Jim Riley's book is an unoriginal idea and a blatant plagiarism of my book and he and his publishing company are looking at a huge lawsuit.....HUGE! .....Just kidding. But you can order my book. I was a studio and touring drummer for many years in Nashville until I realized that country music causes cancer and lowers the IQ. It's basically the lesson I taught for years at Fork's when guys would call me and say "I have to play a session tomorrow and I can't read the numbers!" Call 330 940 3786 to order.

i just recently lost an opportunity for a recording gig because i did not know the Nashville number system. so of course i google this to look into it so i can add it to my arsenal. ive searched every combo of the words i can think of and have no idea how it pertains to the drums. if any one can explain or send me somewhere that explains that would be rad. i understand how it works for keys and octaves and whatnot now but i dont know how it would transfer to the drums.
thanks. skippy.

It is really simple...

If a song is in the key of C, C would be 1, C# would be 2, d would be 3, d# would be 4, e would be 5, f would be 6, so on and so forth...

EX.

15751 would be c e f# e c

Hope that helped.

That is set theory/dodecaphonic numbering. My impression was Nashville was still based on major/minor numbering.

An absolute brilliant system that I use even for "garage bands" because my memorization skills suck. I can usually chart a whole song in a few minutes thanks to Jim. I studied with him in 1996-97 and more than anything, the guy helped me trasnscribe everything I hear and gave me charting pointers years before this book came out. I recommend it!

Nashville system was created to make music easier to transpose while band is at the stage.
As always happens, this sort of systems start with a certain purpose and finish adding something else to music.
I mean, Nashville System ended up changing music style itself.
The way we read and write the music is an important aspect while playing it.
