How is Carlton Barrett playing the Hi-Hats/Cymbals?

Hello. I really need to understand what Carlton Barrett is doing. It's for a paper on Reggae & Dub music.

Are the hi-hats being hit in the center to create those tinging, bell-like tones or is he tapping the ride cymbal in the center to get those sounds, alternating between the two... perhaps? Just to be absolutely clear, I'm talking about the 'tinging' sound within the hi-hat part that occurs just before the 0:18 seconds mark.

Yep, he's playing the top of the hi-hat, on the bow, and then for a moment playing the bell of the hi-hat cymbal.
