Thanks to the low prices of these component drums, I managed to pull together some in a Charlie Watts configuration, but in jellybean format. Got a gig this weekend and I’m debating using these or using the Telstars.... it doesn't matter because I'm always in the back and nobody looks at the drummer ;)

Ok. The Yamaha Stage Custom reference/meme here is something that really is going totally over my head. Why TF is this kit/set the "shiz" on this forum?
It's not, it's just blown out of proportion. There are a handful of views that are extreme to one side or the other. Most of us just think they are drums.

Those handful of folks just make more noise than anyone else. It's an incredibly strange phenomenon.
 
This is how I like to use my Stage Custom Hip kit. Mesh heads , triggers and the Yamaha EAD 10 and quiet cymbals . Perfect for quiet rehearsal in the house and remote recordings . View attachment 117521
Are the triggers being supported by the EAD10, or do they require a separate brain first?

The Stage Custom has become the forum's official objective correlative. It's both an effortless means of garnering attention and a pernicious method of subverting discussions. The ensuing tug of war is mind-numbing in its unfailing repetition, but the call of conflict draws spectators to the inferno. Love or hate it, the Stage Custom is a powerful stimulus.

I have no opinion of the Stage Custom itself. I've never played one, not even in a house or backline format. That I know so much about the product is bizarre.

I think it's kind of fun when discussion here turns "meta," and this post is pretty "meta" on its own... so I want to flesh this out, and anyone is welcome to revise:

Stage Customs seem to have a reputation for having good quality, sound, value, etc. relative to their price. There is agreement that high end kits (e.g., USA Customs, Classic Maples) are "better," but with high prices to match. In turn, Stage Customs began to be recommended as great beginner and gigging/beater kits. Sometimes users would assert that there is no need to ever upgrade from Stage Customs, which has been countered by a small contingent with the opposite, negative opinion, and trolling from both sides.

Most backlines I have played have been Gretsch Catalina or Renowns. Never seem one of these Yamaha kits in any backline.

The backline kit at famous jazz venue in Chicago was a Craviotto. That's porn. Yamaha Stage Customs seem more like pics of naked 90 year old woman or man. If you get aroused by that or SC's....well........ no comment :rolleyes:

I don't find Stage Customs offensive at all. As stated, my lack of direct experience with them precludes the formation of concrete impressions. But their prevalence in our forum is a curious sociological phenomenon, one whose investigation might necessitate participation in a witness-protection program.

No matter what transpires, you never saw me write this.
 
Even though Charlie had an unrivaled collection of drums/cymbals/percussion, it's pretty widely known that his Yamaha Stage Custom jelly bean kit was his prized possesion.

??? Is there an article or something where he stated it was his most prized? Most I have read quote him about his vintage Gretsch '57 round badge. His 60's round badge, black, small kit - The Tony Williams kit. 1940's Radio King set with a 24″ kick and big toms. I read a Steve Maxwell article on Watt's drum collection, and no mention of his prized possession being a SC. Seems it was the Ludwig kit his dad first bought him, and Joe Morello's Ludwig kit.

Is there an article about his most prized possession being a Yamaha Stage Custom jelly bean more so than Joe Morello's kit?
