Followers

Following someone is just a way to show gratitude and respect to that person.

I think that was the intention

It's the digital equivalent of a thumbs up.

It's saying, "Hey I think I like you based on what you write"
I was hoping to get 72 followers before my 72nd birthday! Lol

I couldn't handle any more than about 5 followers.

If I have any more I'd have to be a fearless leader and be a gentleman and set the example......me-no-likey.
I like what Uncle Larry said and I quote:

@Larry If you follow someone. When they post. You get an alert. Is that correct?

I never paid much attention to that until the other day... I happen to notice that someone was following me because I did get an alert that's why I started this thread in the first place because I was curious who might be following me.

So I thought I'd make a goal... I would love to have 72 followers before my 72nd birthday! Oh yeah!

Hey Jda,
I know that you get a 1 time alert that a forum member is now "following" you. However, you don't get an alert every time that member posts something. Now, there might be a way that you could set up an alert every time that member posts something, but that would be buried deep in your forum settings somewhere, if even possible.

Hey D,
Glad to be one more follower towards your goal of 72. :)

Yes, Joe this ^

That would be annoying, an alert to all followers for every post by the followed

While I agree with Larry's comment, that following someone shows respect to the person, I've used the feature more functionally than that.

If I click under "what's new", and then under "newsfeed", it sifts out the latest posts and activities ONLY by the people I follow, posts, reactions, whatever. This is different from clicking "new posts", where I get unsifted new posts from everybody.

So I guess the aim for following someone is to make a point of selecting which members contribute the content you most value, then follow them for the most condensed, optimal experience on the forum.

Or just ignore that and read all the riff-raff like I do :)

how does that qualify as "Following" if their avatar just sits in your info page. Just that initial notification is the substance of a Follow?

It's just a trophy what is the point
You're right Jda. The term "Following" is probably a bit misleading at best.

Back on the old Pearl Drummers Forum we had "Friends". Now, (much like "Followers") that really didn't do anything much except let you say, "Hey I like your online personality/perspective on life, drumming, etc..."

It also let you see if your forum "Friends" were currently on the forum itself. I've noticed that is the same with "Followers" here on the DW Forum. If you click on the "Forums" icon at the top of this page, it takes you to the "Front Page" (if you will) of the DW Forum. On the right-hand side, it will tell you if any of your "Followers/Friends" happen to be currently on the forum.

You can also use it to tailor your "forum experience" like @DrummerJustLikeDad explained in the previous post.

I need 62 more followers by April... let's make it happen!

Wow, never knew this was even a thing! Glad to see the following feature does have a purpose if you use it like this but I agree you'd miss out on a LOT if you only saw posts from people you followed (gotta let the riff-raff have their say) 😄

Thanks Drum Buddy! You made it on my list of followers!
