Being brought up by Northern Italian parents, and my father eventually opening his own Northern Italian restaurant in 1962 (Flushing Queens, NY) , Comfort Food is a bit different than what has been presented here. Pasta Fagioli (or as some may pronounce it....Pasta Fazzul) , Minestrone, Risotto dishes, lots of Fish (Broiled , not Fried, Stripped Bass, Sea Bass, Blue Fish, Flounder - whatever my father would catch while Fishing), Ossobuco ( in fact a lot of Veal based dishes and pork as well as some beef) , Roasted Chicken with Potatoes, Carrots & Celery, Linguini with White Clam Sauce, Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli, Tortellini [made various way, Cappelletti (especially with an old Aunt's Veal based "sauce" or gravy), and Gnocchi [Potato dumplings). When they made homemade Gnocchi, the entire kitchen counter, Ironing boards (yes, Ironing boards) & kitchen table were filled with Gnocchi. They were prepared many ways - veal based sauces, just butter & parmigiana Cheese, etc. Only at certain times of year with potatoes of that particular time were used. And Tripe .... They stewed it in a pot with some red sauce They thought they died and Went to Heaven - I couldn't even Look at It!! Plenty of veggies : Escarole, Spinach, string beans, Eggplant, Zucchini, beans, salad greens. Always fresh Olive Oil & Vinegar - never bottles dressings. As they "Americanized" - Hamburgers and Hot Dogs made it to our table too.
Man, I miss my old Aunt's Veal Gravy on those Cappelletti at Xmas time. A Long Time ago.... Now at 72 yo, much more conservative eating. Gotta stay away from those Statins!
That reminds me. I love a good donut!I do love the sweets though...pepperkokker; semlor buns; Swedish Apple cake; kanelbulle (cinnamon buns)....
That reminds me. I love a good donut!

In 56 years, I have never heard of Goulash referred to as "American Chop Suey". Is that a Northeastern thing?
Probably so. Though according to Wiki it's called other things. In 56 years, I have never heard of Goulash referred to as "American Chop Suey". Is that a Northeastern thing?
A Burger King Double Whopper, large fries and pop. Wife is trying to keep me alive as long as possible and frowns on me partaking in this fine delicacy.
Months ago I was driving through Cadillac, MI. Wife was at home. I pulled into BK and ordered the works. I left a happy man though my arteries hated me.
man, back in the 80's, I LOVED BK Whoppers....as the years went though, I either grew out of the taste, or they changed the taste
sadly, most of the BK's down here became pretty bad....dirty, really bad service, unsafe to be in...I think there are only 2 or 3 in C-bus now
The double whopper with a little extra catsup and salt is a dream. It's still the ultimate bad food choice. But what a way to go!
