I found that after slowly upping my tempo for a roll, after not a very high tempo, it started to sound "wrong". But this is not trying to do a crazy fast tempo, something most people would find trivial, (at 140 bpm sixteenths for a 4/4 whole bar, it was already "wrong"). What I found is that my left hand is slower than my right. I started putting more practice in on my left hand to bring it up but something seemed to be holding me back.
What I eventually found is that when I get toasty, my fingers expand a bit & my wedding band is then a little bit tight. Moving that ring to my small finger while I play allowed me to speed up my left hand & get the sound I expected from the roll.
Anyone else found removing a ring (or moving it to a thinner finger) helps?
