Is there any value in pursuing cheap, steel snare drums?

Ok. Cheap steel snares. Wondering what your thoughts are on these three 14x6.5 snares and all available new. I believe the Ludwigs and Yamahas are made in China and the Sensitones made in Taiwan. Is the Sensitone worth the extra $ compared to the other two? Pearl Sensitone Heritage Alloy 10...

    Local music store hangs?

When I was younger my friends and I would head into Manhattan for whatever and we would always make time to stop in Manny’s on 48th Street. We could spend hours in there just checking stuff out and yapping with anyone who would listen. No music store has since matched up to Manny’s.

    Hanging vs. Floor Tom

Love the kit. The deeper toms and 22” bass drum mean I have to sit a bit higher as positioning the mounted toms is a little more difficult. I tend to prefer a lower seating position but the difference isn’t all that much. Now all I really need is a set of soft padded cases. Oh, and a gig or...

    Hanging vs. Floor Tom

I’m not a big fan of the hanging floors. But in this case I didn’t have much choice. And since I put this kit together I’ve been looking for a true 14x14 floor but haven’t seen a single one. I’m guessing Yamaha may not have made one back around 2000, so it may not exist. I’m ok with that. But……

    Hanging vs. Floor Tom

Thanks. Good suggestion. I actually considered doing that with that stand but I just didn’t want to spend any more money on this effort. I had to draw a line somewhere.

    That’s the one I have.

Is there any value in pursuing cheap, steel snare drums?

Interesting post. I’ve been looking at different snares to expand my sound options and as a weekend warrior I can’t justify spending big money on drums. I have 2 kits, a 1975 Slingerland Stage Band and a 2000/1999 Yamaha Stage Custom that both came with matching snares. But I wanted a metal...

    Rookie mistake tonight

Whether I’m playing a gig or jamming in a studio where kits are supplied, I always bring my own pedal and often my own snare, snare stand and throne as well as cymbals. For me, the snare and bass drum pedal are critical to my being comfortable. I can’t tell you how many times I’ll sit behind a...

    Hanging vs. Floor Tom

I know it’s been a very long time since I first posted about this, I suppose better late than never. I ended up pulling the trigger on the hanging 14” and the 10” tom. I needed to buy another combo tom/cymbal stand for the 10”. And I’m incredibly happy I went for it. They are great sounding...

Two floor tom set ups. 14/16 or 16/18?

I have two kits, both with two floor toms. One has a 14x14 matched with a 14x16. The other has a 12x14 and 14x16. What I would really like is a 14x14 and a 16x16. That to me would be ideal. Never had an 18 so can't comment on that size.

I would suggest that anyone who participates on this forum is not a misanthrope. A true misanthrope would totally avoid any connection with society and would not be caught dead talking with others on social media.

City or country, urban or rural?

I learned about black flies the hard way. Went backpacking with a friend many years ago in May. When we got to our tent site and sat down to make dinner, they came out of nowhere and attacked. My friend said I had a cloud of black flies over my head. I tried to cover up as best I could but...

City or country, urban or rural?

I hear you and agree. I am known for my saying "I hate people." If I had my Adirondack cabin I would probably spend more of my time there than in my urban/suburban home. The only time I would not be in the Adirondacks would be during black fly season which runs for about 6 weeks around May...

City or country, urban or rural?

I grew up on Long Island about a half hour outside of Manhattan. Then when I moved out of my parents house I ended up in New Jersey about the same distance from Manhattan, about a half hour. When I was a kid my parents sent me to a very rough summer camp in the Adirondacks. We did sleep in...

China/Trash Cymbals - to have, or not to have

I have a 17” Zildjian Dark China. Thin and tinny it is not. But as others have said, it depends on the kind of music you are playing.

Is Cakewalk confusing or am I a moron?

Proof that I am a much bigger moron than you. I also have no idea what DAW is. I sort of know what midi is but if you asked me to explain what it is, we’d be out of luck. 🤪

No. I’m an even bigger moron than you. Why? I don’t even know what cakewalk is.

Nothing but the sound of crickets and other night insects. Some of the most glorious music on earth.
