Reworking 18in Sabian

I have an 18 in hand-hammered Sabian medium thin crash it weighs around 1420 grams. It's the model with the cursive hand hammered logo. Looking online I can only find a limited number of cymbals in this category that has the weight listed, but the ones I do find are sometimes lighter than this one. And I found thin ones that are this light and heavier. To me this one sounds too heavy, the crash sound has a lot of clang in it almost like a heavy ride cymbal crash but it opens up faster. Searching on this forum I found some members talking about sending their Sabian to the Sabian custom shop and having it reworked to their liking. That got me thinking maybe I should look into that instead of trying to sell it and buying a thinner one. I sent them a message and I think they're supposed to get back with me sometime in the evening. I have no idea what it needs though as usual I'm clueless LOL more hammering? More laithing? Right now I'd lean towards the laithing part but I don't know. I'm hoping they're Specialists will be able to tell me what needs to be done to achieve the sound I want.
 
My understanding is that Sabian has cancelled their custom shop program, but I could be wrong about that. Regardless, if you're looking to have your cymbal thinned out, then you definitely want it lathed. That will literally scrape away some of the metal to thin it out. It may also need rehammering, but that's more to help shape the sound—hammering by itself will not thin it out.

If Sabian has canceled their program, there are independent cymbal smiths you could send it to. Matt Bettis (DW user name mbettis) would be a great place to start. But you may be better off just selling it and buying something you like better.

I haven't thought about about an independent person, thank you. I guess if Sabian does not get back in touch with me they have canceled their program. From what I could tell last night when I signed up for it , it's still active an automated message came back and said that they would be getting hold of me soon.

I'd be interested in buying said cymbal. I have a fondness for Sabian's HH cymbals from that era. Feel free to PM me photos and what you would want for it.
 
I'm philosophically opposed to reworking cymbals. Their identities are set when they leave the laboratory. If I had a cymbal I didn't like, I'd sell it and buy another. Also, there'd be no guarantee that the customization process would turn out favorably, but I'd have to pay for the result regardless. That proposal exceeds my level of risk tolerance.

@lefty2 , I'm not attempting to persuade you one way or another, just stating my own position.

I’m not opposed to selling it and buying another one at all, it’s just that that idea has been brought to my attention That I could have Sabian take a little bit of material off of it and relogo it relatively cheap. I don’t think they are doing that anymore though so that idea might be out. There is someone on the forum that’s interested in buying or trading for a thinner one. We’ve been talking.

this is really a nice cymbal it’s in almost perfect condition but the crash sounds too heavy for me
