Default Re: Introduce Yourself

I've just joined. Answers to questions follow:

real name? Charles Stanford.
age? 28.
how long been playing? About 11 years, on and off.
origin of user name? I think I came up with it when I was advertising for other musicians to form a band. I wrote something like: "I'm a student of rhythm who likes to hit things."
top 5 drummers? That's difficult - only 5? Ok: Bill Bruford, Marko Timonen, Joey Baron, Jerry Marotta, N.U. Unruh.
make of drumkit? Patchwork: Tama, Ludwig, Pearl, unknown.
make of cymbal? Zildjian, Sabian, Wuhan.
where do you practice? In my apartment - very quietly, or on a practice head, when my schedule allows. Not very satisfying, and my technique is getting rusty.
are you in a band/s? Not at the moment. I've been in several before.
covers or originals? The band I was the most active in did both - started out with classic rock covers and added originals. I was also in a jazz trio that did standards, a lot of Bossa Nova, besides our experimental stuff.
what style of music? Besides the above-mentioned, I have worked with a few songwriters - mostly acoustic settings, except for the one I most recently worked with for over 2 years. His music was often complex and challenging, and I loved it. Someone once told me that I had an ironic, almost humorous style of drumming that she really enjoyed. That was during my deliberate-bursts-of-chaos stage.
favourite take out food? Beto's (popular Mexican chain in Utah) - chips with guacamole. Mmmmm!
country? USA.
one really odd fact about yourself? I like to make up languages.
how did you start drumming? I think Neil Peart was responsible. He also got me trying to write song lyrics, and one of these days I might actually produce something worth singing.

where do you practice? home and at my church where I play
are you in a band/s? yes
covers or originals? both
what style of music? all except rap or metal

how did you start drumming? When I was little I would go straight to the drum department in music stores and stare at the drummers and drums there. Finally I figured out how to use two sticks and I took off from there.

I answered the deep yearning to play drums that I've felt from a young age when my friends at school forced me to take drums lessons (to be fair I'd been pondering it as I'd had my teachers' number for four months before I finally plucked up the courage to phone him!) so they could have a drummer for their band and I haven't looked back since.

how did you start drumming- Grew up with a long family history of drumming. My dad got me into it at a very young age by buying me a snare drum for the concert band program at school. Although before that he was teaching me all kinds of rudiments and what not that I would just tap out on the table with my hands. Then finally, maybe 5-6 years ago, I actually got my first drum kit. It was a 1963 vintage Slingerland kit. I love that drum kit! We got it from my grandma's cousin. He was a Pro drummer many many moons ago. He also gave us a whole trunk full of percussion equipment, all of his cymbals (which my drum teacher and several vintage collectors around here claim to be Zildjian A cymbals from the early 70s, maybe late 60s. I still use a couple of those, and they sound awesome with my other A Customs. My cousin even gave me his old Speed King pedal! That thing flies! So yeah, I stopped using that kit this past winter and bought my PDP LX series kit in a Cherry-Black fade. Beautiful. And thats how it all started for me. =D

one really odd fact about yourself- I want to become a pro baseball player or a pro martial artist or boxer besides a famous drummer

how did you get started- My dad'd side of the family has a whole line of musicians, famous ones. I played drums when i was really little , but had my first kit and wasn't used to play , but like bang on them. Then, i lost interest in them. I started playing guitar for a few yrs. Then, when i was nine i got into music very seriously and liked the way the drums sounded. They kept the band alive. So i started playing the drums. I was a slow starter. Not liking any metal at the time, or having any influences I really didn't kickoff until 6 th grade where i joined the school band. I saved 2 of our concerts when our best drummer didn't show up. Then, in 7th grade i got tons better. I played in my dad'd band a few times, playing Metallica at home with my junk kit. Then, when i entered 8th grade when i was 13 goin on 14, I really became good. I was our school's best band drummer. My dad's band's drummer gave me some videos of drummers. I got hooked on dennis chambers. I learned how to do triplets, and one footed rolls, even though he doesn't do it as fast as i can. I learned how to play awesome grooves and solos, and fast hands and feet. I haven't found a better drummer to learn off of yet, by far. A few months ago like in may i got Giant drum sticks that are bigger than baseball bats, and have gotten a lot faster and a lot stronger, and my one- footed rolls which i play on my right side of my foot on my right foot, on my toe came with training for boxing, and other sports. That's how i got started.

one really odd fact about yourself- Before I started druming I could bench 150lbs, Now, I bench 210lbs :]

how did you get started- My whole life I was into music, purcusion mostly. I've made electronic music for 4 years, and loved it. My friends and I wanted to start a band, and i never thought I could play drums untill I got my self stuck in a situation.

So, me and 2 of my friends went to a Taking Back Sunday concert, In philadelphia. When we walked out one of my friends told these 2 girls that we're a band, and all the great stuff, all LIES!! - The girls hung out with us for like 2 hours, then came the question, "So, Zach...What do you play in the band?" I got all fast thinker, and replied "Drums, duh!!" Well..week after the girls wanted to see our "Band" play..And brought friends with them. We all threw money together and bought a peice of snap Remo: ENFORCER drumset, 2 amps the guitarist had an extra bass guitar we put it all in my garage and pretented to be a band, I played basically cause I had a set....From that day on there was a band, called "Loretto Avenue" its been about 2 years now..we're actually decent :] ...pretty sad story, eh?

how did you start drumming? As a kid there was a garage band (no name) up the street. We had just moved in to the neighborhood from West Philly. There was a band playing and they just blew me away. Especially the drummer. I just couldn’t take my eyes off of what he was doing. And I knew after seeing them that’s what I wanted to do for a living. Didn’t quite work out that way however.
