burning a hole into a bass drum?

Hello,

I was wondering if the trick of when you take a tin can, put it on the stove, and burn a hole through a bass drum head works with out the drum head ripping when you tune the head? Or is it better to go and spend the $$ on a kickport?

Thanks

Several threads here about it and YouTube has several videos that show how to do it in several different ways. I like to use a reinforcement ring around a bass drum porthole just in case a microphone hits the edge or something similar happens that could cause the hole to tear.

The Kickport only fits after the hole is cut, so it makes no difference. The Kickport theory is based on the tuned bass port used in speaker cabs.
