Hello.would a ludwig classic maple 26'' bass drum work for old school funk like sly and the family stone, james brown, the meters, tower of power, average white band ,red hot chili peppers Parliament and Funkadelic. If so what heads would you use. Thanks Peace

I'm sure it would. Though it depends what the amp/micing situation you have in your band is. I think you'd have to get used to it, since it might be easy to overplay and drown out other members. Stanton Moore has a 26" satellite bass drum but then again his main one is a 20". Personally I think it's a bit over the top, I'd opt for a 22" or a 20". And the bonus is they're much easier to transport.

Headswise you could go for these powerstroke 3 heads.... or you could save yourself some money and play around with the dampening levels: pillows, felt strips etc. Good luck with it!

You can play anything on a 26". Just play around with the dampening ,until you find what works.

I could use my 16x26 for that kind of music easily.

I just use a Coated Ambassador batter and good tuning (smooth white front). A muffle roll I made myself goes between the head and pedal post. I use a 3" x4" piece of Coated ambassador material taped to the beater impact point. Very old school way of doing it, but it works great, and IMO sounds better than pre-muffed heads (that's why I do it haha!!).

If you're buying a drum (or kit) and you play that type of music, a 24 might be a bit better because it sounds fat, but a little more of a controlled punch.
If you have one, a 26 can work, you just have to try a few things out and see what works for you.
Mine has plenty of punch, and it's not overly boomy. It's just big sounding.
My bass players love it (4 bands).

When I used a 26" I had a Aquarian Full Force heads on the front and back (same as Powerstroke 3). I used a small DW pillow inside, and it sounded great. For funk music I might add a little more dampening, but not much. Just to give it more punch and less boom...

I use a 26x16 I have an Aquarian super kick 2 on it, very few head manufacturers make a 26 head. I also use a DW pillow in there.
Batter head loose, resonant head v tight, I have a wonderful thump with a nice ring to it that works for rock and funk, not so great for Jazz though.....ha

I use a 26X14 for about every application. It works quite well. I also use a 28X14 just as often and that also sounds amazing in every application, Including studio recording. I left my 28" in the studio for about a month and half the bands recording in that time opted to use that instead of the 22" that was there already as it sounded killer.
I use powerstroke 3 on both drums.

Mole Skin works great too. Just about impervious to even the 'old school' hardwood bass drum beaters. Simply shape to your Single/double bass drum pedal impact point(s). They last for years on end. Scissor-cut to size. Sticky backed to stay.
