Oh my word... That fill!

You probably know the feeling: you're listening to a song, and all of a sudden it happens: that fill. The timing and phrasing you've always dreamt of. It might be played by your favorite drummer, it might be some guy you've never heard of before. The kind of fill you repeat over and over, and if you get to play the whole song, you're constantly waiting for the fill to come.

So, if you do, post 'em here. I'll start.

Keith Carlock at 3:48. Damn.

Vinnie Colaiuta, opening fill. Even more damn.

A couple of personal favourites from one of my favourite drummers: Jeff Campitelli

Snare and hihat combination at 6:10

A lovely little one-handed cymbal swell at 2:12 and then another great fill at 5:11

How about Jason Bonham's fill going out of the solo in We All Die Young (at 3:08)

None of these are complicated, but I think they're simply very well executed and perfectly placed in the song.

Then there are more complicated ones, like this Gavin Harrison fill in Shesmovedon (at 3:19)

There's a beauty in this Spock's Beard song A Guy Named Sid, played flawlessly by Nick D'Virgilio at 1:50 (while singing too!)

There's generally some brilliant drumming in all those clips !!!!

The one I've left in the quote marks, if you listen to the guitar riff with the drum intro that bit at 5.11 it sounds just like the riff in "I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends"

I'll see if I can find some and post.

Like that 1:50 triplet fill. Actually, surprisingly, one I can do with some confidence. Although slightly more simple, I prefer the execution of his fill at 0:33. Now that's what I call nailing it!

My choice comes from, IMHO, the greatest pop album of all time. Nik Kershaw's "The Works". Features Vinnie Colaiuta on most of the tracks & Jeff Pocaro for shuffle work on 1. Anyhow, "Don't ask me" from that album. Fill at 3:15 is a killer. Well documented, I know, but super great non the less.

And here's an explanation breakdown of the fill for those of you who have the time (& the skill) to woodshed this.

Enjoy & beat yourself up!

That's one sweet fill !
For anybody here that's old enough to remember Cheech & Chong "I saw God Man"

Although personally i can't stand the band or their rendition of this classic, a fill that still surprises me which hear quite often (due to the ridiculous amount it is overplayed on my local radio station)
is the fill 1:22 at in Alien Ant Farm's version of Smooth criminal

gets me every time! Something about the snare sound perhaps?

Well i have to add some metal, it might not be a rudimental fill but the first time i heard it i listened to it for hours on end figuring out how to play it and damn it sent shivers up me spine. It starts at 3:01

Damn, that's indeed what I meant by 'the fill'. Never heard it before by the way.

Glad you like it Rascul. I'd recommend listening to the whole album. It's a dream groove performance from start to finish. Pop music is usually regarded as the wasteland of drumming taste, but this album breaks all the rules. Not just the drumming, but everything about this album is the very best you can find IMO. The song writing, arrangements, production & players performances are all at a level so rare in pop. An underrated classic of a generation & a must listen for passionate musicians of any genre.
