Made me chortle.

They do stop flying bottles...

what is the actual use of a drum shield? I always have looked at it as a way of protecting your stuff from guys wandering around absent mindedly...

The keep stage bleed to a minimum by blocking the drums' sound. You get a much cleaner vocal sound without drums in the vocal mics.

One of my bands uses a drum shield, its a whole different world. You put yourself in the box and then couple it with use of in ear monitors you become very disconnected. Its also hard to see more than a few feet outside of the plexi. Using one on a big stage would be a nightmare. There are some downsides, but the one upside is huge. I can play at a level that I'm comfortable with and not worry about blasting the band out. And since I'm a naturally heavy hitter it's made my life so much easier.
