nice playing

but just curious.... are you calling it a "gospel chop" simply because it is mostly linear ?

there is more to a "gospel chop" than playing a linear pattern

you play it more like a "metal chop" actually .... sounds a lot like Dave Lombardo to me

nice lick regardless

Thanks.
Yes i know it's curious but in Europe we often confuse "gospel chop", "fill", "lick" "linear lick"..

And drummers like Eric moore, Aaron Spears play the same licks and you call it gospel chops..

So it's easy to confuse.

I can change the title to "linear lick breakin down" if you want! ;)

I'm coming across many gospel chops videos lately. I am curious are there a set of characteristics that describe/define gospel chop - I was naively assuming it was just a tag for a loose knit group of players that came up through through really great church groups.

it has taken on a new meaning in recent years .... it apparently now means any linear pattern in 16th note, sextuplet or 32nd notes played quickly

gospel licks when played correctly are executed with a certain set of dynamics .... the way the players that came out of the churches like Jeff Davis, Marvin McQuitty Gerald Heyward etc would play them .

Jerohn Garnett explains it well here

what's funny is most of these guys that came out of the churches and are given credit for spearheading this movement site Vinnie as the father of the "gospel chops" style

Thank you for clearing that up!

I have listened to a lot of gospel music and almost everything I hear labeled gospel chops would be way over playing the music. Confused. Most of it would be overkill for second line drumming.

Agreed but it sure looks like those guys are having fun. Just kinda showing off for each other, I wish I could show off like that (not at a gig of course) - there are some videos labeled Berkley Chops that are very similar.
