Perhaps consider something in the 6 x 10 popcorn size. You can get an awesome crack with a sharp, high - pitched "pop" depending on your tuning. Definitely stay with the single ply head.
When I ordered a box set of Zildjian cymbals a few Black Fridays ago, Musician's Friend threw in a free PDP/Pacific "Blackout" 6 x 10 snare. I really didn't think too much of it when I 1st got it. Just tossed it on a tom stand next to the 10" tom.
However, whenever other drum mates stop by and play my kit, that is their favorite snare! Has the coolest "POP" to it. My other snares include a DW Collectors and a Stewart Copeland.
IDK, they all love this one though. It is kinda cool as a side snare. Can't beat the $120 price either!
