My room treatment project

I finally decided it was time to attempt to treat my room. Ever since I added drums back to my arsenal I have been gearing up for recording again and have been re-arranging and building to prepare. iN the past few months I built a drum riser, a desk and an amp stand. A new interface and mics are on their way to me in a couple weeks so I figured it was time to treat this place. I didnt do any tests or anything, which Im sure I should have but it already sounds better in here.

The room is not ideal at all. The room is approx. 15.5'x10.5' with 78" ceilings. Its a small room I finished in my basement. I have been doing a little here and there for the past two years. I started with putting in new windows and then framed and dry walled. I just built it like a room, nothing fancy.

The layout of the room is not ideal. In once corner I framed in a closet because I didnt want to move the electric panel and in another corner is the entrance door. So putting corner traps in both spots is not doable. The arrangement of the room has changed a few times over the past two years, before I had the drums my desk was where the drums are now.

Anyways, onto the treatment part. I used 2" OC703, not faced. I already have a small room and I didnt want to make it feel too much smaller so I used 4" for the corner traps and just 2" for the broadband panels. For the corner traps I just framed it, installed the fiberglass, stretched fabric over it and framed it out.

For the panels I framed them using 1"x4" cheap pine. Since the boards were cheap they werent as straight as I would have liked so once completed they were a bit twisted. I installed them onto the walls using 2x4's as cleats and this also allowed me to push the frames flush with the wall and screw it into the cleats.

I usually borrow my dads compound miter saw but he was using it so I did all of this with a circular saw. It looks ok from far away but if you look close you can see the flaws. It was also a lot more difficult getting the fabric tight, much harder than I thought. Once I realized that I kind of just did it and didnt obsess over how tight it was. Here it is all finished up:

Next week Im going to start working on the clouds. I also have some scrap pieces from cutting that I plan to make a few smaller panels out of so it doesnt go to waste. Im also going to install some short boom stands from the ceiling fro drum overheads to conserve space because as you can see it pretty tight in here. Ill post those pics once its all completed.

I realize that this is room treatment and not soundproofing, but does the drywall and the traps help keep the sound contained?

Rad man! i could only wish i had that space at my place that i could actually do something like that, oh and also the money XD. Nah really good job man. Easier said than done but i think while u were building it all yourself, i think you should have completed it all off with sound padding and sound proofing it all. Would be SICK! :) Enjoy bud!

Been awhile since Ive been around. We added an addition to our house starting last August and moved back in in January. During that process this room had to get destroyed to make room for some steel posts and beams to support the addition. Needless to say I wasnt playing much drums during this time! Since late July I began work on rebuilding the room. No major changes except I added a subfloor, laminate and also a snake to run all the cables from my drum mics which I also use as a headphone return. I am very happy with the results. I still need a few little things like some vent covers and something to cover the breaker box but all major stuff is complete.
