Gong-tastic!

Throughout the gigging year, I play a 4 piece kit with all of the bands I play with, sometimes adding a side snare to make it a 5 piece.
Once a year, I get bored with that and decide to go NUTS and setup a big monster kit. Have a gig this Saturday : big stage, nice house PA, lots of time to setup = = time for Drummageddon.
It just so happens that my local drum shop got a Sabian 28" Zodiac gong in, and it's rent-able! All you guys who have gongs, I know a 28" is no big deal, but I'm lovin' it. I may not be able to bring it back.

It's pictured below with the small kit I have setup right now - but it will be part of a large setup based around my red sparkle MCAN + Hexrack. Stay tuned!!

Gongs rule.

Bo, this is all your fault. Thank you.

BANG A GONG

BANG A GONG

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet

Neal, that looks just wonderful! Yes, Bo's fault for sure.

I love gongs, & man, I could play around in that Memphis gong chamber all day! Just the name "chamber" is exciting enough on it's own!

Looking forward to your full setup pictures :)

Oh, & video of the gig or it didn't happen!

That looks bad azzzz man........
Yes, it does. I've discovered that gongs are highly addictive...

Video of the gig? Wow, we're upping the ante, aren't we? :p
Don't know if I'm going to be able to setup video for this one - but I do have a 'drum tech' buddy helping me with this one...maybe!

If you're renting the gong, are you still allowed set it on fire?
LMAO! :) I swear to god, I had this same thought.
Unfortunately, the lounge wouldn't appreciate their lighting rig & ceiling being caught on fire and evacuating the adjoined casino.
The gong is rented from Long and McQuade and judging from the condition of some of their rental kits, they don't seem to care. Just the kind of place for Bo.
(If I keep summoning him, he will eventually appear)

Finally a fault I can be proud of!

Maybe you can "rent-to-own" ? I don't use mine in every song I play, but it feels good knowing it's there ;)

There you are!

Yup, maybe rent to own…

That's it exactly; it feels good just knowing it's there. My bandmate asked "So musically - where would you use this, on what songs…?" I said I have no idea, and it doesn't really matter. I'll find an appropriate spot, don't worry

Well, you'd have to experiment with it in every song you do to find out first ;)

Getting there with the setup. This takes (me) a long time. Lots and lots of trial and error. It will be a 16" and a 22" bass drums, I will add a wood hoop to the reso side of the 16". Still undecided about many things.
I wish I had a set of wind chimes now to go with that lonely gong :p

I would totally have a gong if I could find one for the right price. One day the stars will align for me...

Kinda in the same boat as I'm only renting this one. It's a reasonable price, about $600 new.
The best prices I've seen are the Dream gongs - $500 for a 28" Chau gong. Haven't heard any though.

Yeah, the pricing on the Paiste Symphonic gongs are pretty high. I looked my 22" up and some places sell them new for a little over $500. The magic size I wanted, either 36" or 40" you're getting into that $2600 range. But the ultimate would be the 80" at a paralyzing $24,000.00! And these prices don't include a mallet or a stand!

Paiste only wants their gongs played by the privileged, I guess!

That Dream 28" might be something to check out.
