Trading fours when the tune has tags

Usually whoever is soloing at the end of the form--usually you-- plays the extra measures on his solo. Or if the tag is 4 bars long, you might stick to four measure solos, so the drums end up playing the first solo on the next chorus-- I feel like that's done more often on shorter forms. What will never happen is a solo bridging sections, especially not at the top of the form-- the beginning of a section will always be a new soloist. So if you're trading 4s on Smile, which is 34 bars long, and the band (kind of stupidly) comes back in on bar 33, the soloist will only play two measures, and you'll play the first 4 at the top of the next chorus.
