Just thought I would post my refinished Gretsch Catalina Clubs. These were once white marine pearl. The only problem was that I bought them used and each drum had faded to a different color and the bass drum was half white half yellow. I was going to buy a new drum set but currently do not have the money (broke college student). I always liked the sound of these drums but they just appeared cheap to me and I wanted something that I could be proud of. That's when I decided to stain them.
At first I was a little worried because they are made of luan. I decided that if the grain was terrible I would just buy wrap and re wrap them. After removing the wrap it was pretty nice so I settled on a red mahogany stain. I figured the darker color would hide some of the slight imperfections which it does.
Hope you like. They are not perfect but it took a lot of time and they sound great. I have a few things left to do like add vent hole eylets and I am also going to take off the tom mount but I need to get a plate made first.
Also I forgot to mention that I tung oiled the bass rims that were beat up and the insides of the shells.
