Default Realizing that its in the BLOOD!

Hey guys and gals! Haven't been around for awhile. Stepped away from the kit, sold all my gear and put down the sticks. Apartment life makes it tough to practice when I want and need to. I made the decision to put it all away-pack it in-throw in the towel. Give it up. Finding a band to play for seemed near impossible and I got into a rut in my playing. I was discouraged and lacked the passion to play that I mostly retained from my more youthful day. Now at closing in on 52 years old, I feel a flicker, a faint but ever present pilot light glowing. I thought I could completely extinguish my love of the instrument and just be the guy with memories of bygone days of blissful grooving and that would be that. Now I'm not so sure that that is my mind set. I still drum on everything. When I'm at a stoplight, its the steering wheel and dash (floor boards make a great kick sound) When at home its my lap or table of some sort. It drive the wife crazy. She asked me the other day when I was going to stop kidding myself and start playing again. That got me thinking and starting to go revisit forums and really examine my life with and without drums.
Sorry that this post went a little long. This is the first time in a while I have posted anything on a drummer forum.. It feels almost natural to be here. I realize that it feels in natural to not be playing. -James

Real name? Bob Davis

Age? 41

How long have you been playing? 27 years

Origin of user name? I'm Bob. STX is the airport code for where I live - St Croix, in the US Virgin Islands

Your top 5 drummers? In no particular order: Neil Peart, Steve Smith, Manu Katche, Carter Beauford, Joe Morello

Make of drumkit? Working on building my own. In the meantime, I'm playing a borrowed kit.

Make of cymbal? Any drummer not getting paid to endorse a make who insists on one make is foolishly restricting his potential voices. In the past, before I matured into someone who realizes that "Ford vs. Chevy" arguments are puerile, I was pretty loyal to Paiste. But then I wised up. I'll play what sounds best, and I couldn't care less who made it.

Where do you practice? Spare bedroom, to my wife's dismay.

Are you in a band? Yes. Kind of. ;)

Do you play covers or originals? Mix.

What style of music? You could call it "roots rock".

Favourite take out food? Indian.

What country do you live in? US Virgin Islands.

One really odd fact about yourself? I've had seven careers, if you count music, in my short life. From soldiering to brewing craft beer to running my own business.

How did you start drumming? Clarinet is infinitely less cool than drums. Krupa > Goodman! :D

Hey guys. As you can tell, I joined this forum back in summer of 2005, I only made a couple of posts and haven't come back since. I was 18 and just graduated from high school. I have been a prolific member at musician's forums (what was MXtabs and is now Sputnik Music) since 2004 although the forums have been gutted and there's no drum community anymore.

I've been playing constantly, but there was a 2-3 year period just recently where I stopped advancing and even started decreasing in skill, as the bands I was playing in weren't engaging me. I don't even live with my drumset but I've been woodshedding the past couple of months on a drumpad and have already seen vast improvements.

Real name? Justin Radford
Age? 27
How long have you been playing? 15 years this summer
Origin of user name? Long story, but its been my online alias since 1999.
Your top 5 drummers? Ian Paice, Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell, Ringo Starr, Gene Krupa
Make of drumkit? Sonor, Pearl, and Rhythm Traders
Make of cymbal? Zildjian, Sabian, Amedia, Wuhan, Paiste
Where do you practice? Pad at my apartment, set at parents' house and at rehearsal studios
Are you in a band? Two permanently, although I am temporarily filling in for a third at this time while they find a permanent drummer
Do you play covers or originals? Mostly originals but I am a fan of covers
What style of music? One is proto-metal (think Deep Purple/Uriah Heep), the other is campy indie pop
Favourite take out food? Thai
What country do you live in? United States
One really odd fact about yourself? I have a larger head, and shorter limbs than the vast majority of people my height
How did you start drumming? Taking snare drum lessons
