What kit do you use?

I have a few kits I use :

For Big Band and Classic Rock Gigs - Yamaha Club Custom 10/12/14/20

For small group Jazz,Big band and occasionally Classic Rock - Gretsch USA Custom 12/14/20

For rehearsals, acoustic small room gigs - Whitney Nesting Penguin 16 kit.

For practice at home - Yamaha DTX950K

I also own a 1972 Gretsch kit in walnut lacquer 18/12/14

10/12/14/16/22 Catalina Maple
Gibraltar 9000 stands
DW 5000 DBD pedal and hi-hat stand.
Snares from Gretsch, Ludwig, Longo, Yamaha and G.Way.
Roc'n'Soc/Gibraltar throne

Yamaha Live Oak 10 12 16 22
Magstar Maple 12 16 22
1971 Slingerland 12 16 22
Snares, Ludwig, Pearl, Magstar, Logo's

2006 Mapex in peacock swirl---12,13,16,22,14x5 with PDP, Tama, Pearl, and Mapex hardware---Meinl, Zildjian, Wuhan, and Sabian cymbals---Remo Pinstripes on the toms, coated Ambassador on the snare, and Powerstroke 3 on the bass with all stock resos---I only have $700 into the kit, and like larryace mentioned I don't tell people anymore so I won't hurt their feelings! I also agree that heads, and tuning are the key to great sounding drums

I play my 1987 Tama Granstar 9 piece kit.

Inspired by Lars Ulrich I got it as my first kit and strangely enough it could be it, I mean the one in the picture below:

I have yet to get it confirmed but the kit and Lars were in London at the same time. Also the bass drum skins?? Came from the Puppets tour kit which also were in London with Metallica. Strange one.

Early 50's Gretsch Broadkaster WMP 22, 13, 16, w matching snare
Mid 60's Slingerland jazz BMP 18, 12, 14, w matching Artist snare
late 60's Ludwig 6 piece WMP 20, 12, 13, 14, 16, w Black Beauty snare
Ludwig Club Date Special Edition WMP 22, 13, 16, w matching snare
Mapex Saturn Manhattan Jazz Cherry lacquer 18, 10, 12, 14, w matching snare

Get your teacher to buy some new heads for them, may be surprised what they sound like. Old doesn't necessarily mean bad, they could be incredible sounding kits if tuned up properly with new heads. Do you know what drums they are?
I'll see what I can do, and I'll check when I'm back at school.

What are the "old" sets? Old does not always mean junk.
True, the skins are just very battered.

Those are some really nice kits guys :)

For a clean, contemporary pop sound: Yamaha Oak Custom 10/12/14/22

For everything else: Gretsch Round Badge 13/16/20

A selection of snares but my main choices are:
DW Craviotto Single-Ply Maple 6.5x14
70s Ludwig Black Beauty 5.5x14
70s Ludwig 402 6.5x14

A selection of cymbals, mostly K Zildjians but I've got some vintage 50s and 60s As that I love and a few Sabian models kicking around, too.

In our blues band, I use these:

Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz: 18x14, 12x8, and 14x14; sometimes I use the toms with a Pearl Export 22x18 bass drum that matches

Snares: Pacific SX 14x5.5, Mapex Saturn 14x5.5

Cymbals (all Sabian): AA Bash Ride 21", AAX Studio Crash 18", AA Thin Crash 17", and XS20 Medium Hats 14"

Peace and goodwill.

I've never been a good "obedient" consumer, since 10 years old I've played the same WMP 2pc. 50's Leedy with a 60's WMP Ludwig tom. Zildjian K's and an A crash.

So what, you are 12 years old then, right? :p

Good God man...how you manage to pull that off...with all the temptation here....is so far beyond my own personal comprehension, that I just have to stand in awe at the sheer magnitude of your self control.

Did I hear you correctly? A 2 piece? That's insane!

If I were a working pro or semi-pro, it'd be different...you all need those extra options, snares, cymbals.

Some day I'm going to own something along the lines of those beautiful Guru's that you are sporting, btw. :) But it's just not fascinating to me...I try all different drums in the drum shops, and they just don't sound much better than what I have. lol

Main kit is a Mapex Saturn, 1up, 1down (12, 16, 22) and a variety of snares from Mapex, Pearl and Ludwig. All Zildjian A Customs, K custom hybrids, Avedis.

Small gigs and street drumming= Breakbeats

I play a Yamaha Stage Custom set. I use it for the open mic jam. Many other drummers play on it every week.

I have a 1963 Slingerland kit that was my first drum set.

I Have a new Yamaha Live Custom oak kit that I love. It is the first new kit I ever purchased. It is my "don't touch my drums" set.

I play Zildjian cymbals. I had to hit a lot of cymbals to find out what I like.

.

Gretsch New Classic WMP, 8", 10", 12", 14" & 18" with matching snare, and a black nickel over brass 5x14" ltd edition snare. Paiste 2002 and some K's & A's.
At home a Roland e-kit.

I have two kits: a first-generation Yamaha Stage Custom in 8/10/12/14/16/20, and a 1972-ish Ludwig Standard with 3-ply shells in 13/16/22 which I recovered from being dumpster food to being my #1 kit. I also play a Mapex Mars birch kit at church with the same diameters as my Ludwigs, only the 13" is a power tom.

Clean the drums, give them new heads properly tuned, and you'd be amazed. There are actually very few drums that cannot be made to sound at least decent.
