Hi Mapexer,

I need help in actually indentifying/ verifying this kit.

I found this in Craigslist about 100 miles from me. The fella said that it is a Horizon Big City kit, however, when he sent me the pictures, the finish is not the Big City kit I see on the web and I can't find any information about this Horizon kit....help? are these an older model I guess?

i individually bought a big city bass drum in midnight black. The hardware is correct in the pictures you posted, but two I see two red flags

1) the bass drum hoops are supposed to be wood, but in the picture they're black (ie, metal)

2) the finishes on all big city kits are laquered. this kit has a wrap.

I wouldn't bother with this ad.

Mapex has strange naming conventions. As far as I can tell, there are two Big City kits -

one from the Voyager line: http://www.justdrumsonline.com/p-7593-mapex-voyager-5pc-big-city-drum-set-with-hardwarecymbals.aspx
Voyager is poplar with a wrap.

and one from the Horizon line: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Mapex-Horizon-HZB-Big-City-5-Piece-Shell-Pack-365523-i1822619.gc

Horizons are birch/basswood. The zZounds site says the finishes are lacquer.

At any rate, the Voyager appears to be less expensive. Personally, I wouldn't worry about the hoops or finish, or any other particulars if the price was right, and they looked and sounded good.

Yeah It's funny because it looked like the Voyager series but the logos says Horizon....the guy is selling them for $279 include a mapex pedal and snare stand...and I couldn't find any voyager big city in the website that looks like this....I may pass on this.

The sizes would indicate a "big city" configuration. Mapex uses common names for common size configurations, regardless of line. In the past a person could get the "Studioease" (10/12 toms, 14/16FT, 18x22 bass) in three different lines in the same model year.

That may be an early (first-year?) Horizon kit in the "big city" configuration. It is definitely NOT a current Horizon (HZB) "big city" kit.
