Evans G14 blowout prices

Hey all - so I stopped in at my local Guitar Center yesterday and noticed they had a bunch of heads on clearance. They had a few (6) 14" white coated G14 heads priced at $4.95 each. After reading the box, the G14 is basically a single-ply 14-mil thick head. I know the G2's are two 7-mil ply heads, and I love those. The G14 can't be any worse - so I bought them all. Good deal.

Does nobody like the G14? Does it have any inherent problems? I figure the rate I go through heads when I'm busy, they wouldn't be on for more than 3-4 weeks at a time anyway, and now I have a stock of them.

They had other sizes in clear, but not all the sizes I needed, so I just opted to buy all the 14" ones. I hope nobody else wanted them ;)

What bummed me out was the fact that it was news to the clerk there that Remo was making clear powerstroke 3 bass drum heads with a black dot. He had no idea. My Pearl Reference Pures are getting black dots on the next go around - even a black dot on the front of the bass drum!

I use two G14 coated. 13 inch on my pork pie patina, and 14 inch on a concept maple snare.
I love them! These are my go to for snare heads. Very durable and the coating doesn't come off easily so thats good. I use it just to get rid of some ring but not all. It does the job perfectly!

Whew! I thought there'd be no hope ;)

I do like the G2 heads (when I'm not using Remo Emperors) so I figured a single-ply 14-mil head should fit right in.

I've experienced EVANS coating melting in higher temp weather/exposure situations, once it melts it stays tacky/sticky.

Used to could buy stick on dots, maybe someone knows where to still get them (?).

Well, I suppose I'm lucky that I hardly ever play outside. But I'm sure now that I've said that, something will pop up where I'll be playing outside on the hottest day of the summer.

Shoot, it seems like I will die of old age before I get a chance to try all the different heads I'd like to try. My Emps are over a year and 3 months old. The coating is dark in the middle and starting to wear off, but they still sound great to my ears and there are no dents in them. My PCRD, texture coated RD, and HD Dry snare heads show no sign of wearing out anytime soon either. And I have a coated 1-ply 14" Attack head waiting in the wings. Sounds like a great deal. I'd like to hear a G14 on my Acrolite snare drum.

I use a G14 on my 10" tom and it works wonders. My kit consists of an 8/10/12 rack and 14/16 FTs The 8" gets a G1, the 10 a G14, the 12/14/16 get EC2s. I switched from a G2 to see how it would work and Im pleasantly surprised at the durability (gigging/practicing 4 days a week) and tone of the head. Im going to have to check out my local Banjo City to see if they have em on sale.

They had them on clearance at GC a year ago , so I bought a 12 figuring out I had nothing to lose. Put it on , played it a couple of days and took it right of. It is now on my clearance stack , in a corner of the drum room. Collecting dust !!!

There was a topic on this a while ago, that Bermuda chimed in on... The G14s are great on drums that are 12" and larger, but not so great on an 8" or 10" tom. After testing them myself, I'd have to agree. I would almost say that I don't even like a G14 on a 12", personally. However, my 14" and 16" floor toms on both my Starclassic Maple and Bubinga kits seem to LOVE them.

I too snapped up almost two full sets (8", 10", 12", 14", 16") at GC in their clearance bin. I had to special order the 12"s, though.

If anyone remembers, these are essentially (more or less) the short-lived EC1, minus the aluminum muffling ring. They discontinued those after only a year or two on the market. I liked them, but they didn't exactly set the world ablaze either.

I think the big push right now is the re-marketing of the G-Plus (12mil) under its new G12 designation.

I think they would be great on a setup of graduated thicknesses, like EvansSpecialist recommended before. 10mil G1 on an 8", 12mil G12 on 10" and 12", 14mil G14 on 14" and 16".

Even if Evans discontinues the tom sizes, I hope they'll never get rid of them as a snare head. For some of my snare drums that are very fussy about the batter heads put on them, they work perfectly.

They worked quite well on my 10-12-15 tom setup as you described! Personally the G14 is actually a little much for general use on my 15" so my general array is G1 on the 10" and G12s on the 12 and 15, both coated and clear.. I still use the G14 on the 15" for metal though.

Stopped in there and asked about it.
They didn't know what I was talking about and couldn't find anything on the computer about it.

Grrrrr

It's because they're doing them on a store-by-store basis. It's not an advertised thing at all. Your local GC might not be trying to move old stock of G14s at all.

Yeah, sorry I didn't mention that. I'm in the middle of four GC's locally, and you have to visit them in-person to see if they're giving out any deals on anything. I just happened to wander into one of them and this is what they had on the floor as clearance items.

I'm noticing alot of my local GC's are picking up many used kits to buy and sell as well - it's a total buyers market out there in terms of used gear with the economy the way it is, and bless those chain music stores like GC and Sam Ash for being able to buy used gear. They're almost easier to deal with and to negotiate a lower price because of their buying power - they just want to move the stuff most times - whereas if I was dealing with a private seller, they wouldn't haggle at all.

Hmm. Strange, I just traded in 4 stands and it was a bit of a hassle as the salesman had to inspect them all, the next manager up, and then the store manager. Even though I'm a regular and they all know me they are skeptical to buy any used gear because apparently drum hardware is tough to deal with.

The store manager told me that GC is actively trying to reduce gear buying unless they market them really low like 30-50 so they move quick. I'm sure we've all seen the used drum section on the website, absolute disaster filled with junk mostly.

Hmm. The three GC's near me in SoCal have some pretty good kits in stock, and they don't appear to be trying to sell them for less than they're worth. Nice selection, which was good to see considering the new kits they had for sale too. I'm sure the used stuff sits longer than usual, but at least they have some.

The used cymbal market on GC, though, is outstanding, at least for Meinl stuff. I notice that a lot of smaller brands aren't well described and bigger ones are full of questionable content but they have amazing prices & selection. Musician's Friend has a lot nicer condition used stuff but, of course, less. I've bought 1 used cymbal from GC and 3 from MF and have no complaints at all.

Used drum hardware is definitely a harder thing to market, and my two local GCs are just STACKED with used kits. But cymbals seem to work.

I put clear G14's on my 13 & 16 gig kit rack and floor toms and they sounded great at the gig I played this night.
