I don't own this kit but I was looking into buying this kit as well as many others. I assume you live in the US but here in the UK there are many stores that have them in stock so I managed to try a kit out. I thought the sound was generally good. The snare was incredibly nice-sounding and sounds like a snare you would have to buy individually rather than a matching snare for a shell pack. The toms sounded good too, good clear attack and good sustain. Too many overtones for my preference but I think this would be solved if you change the stock heads to 2-ply heads such as remo emperors or pinstripes. My only complaint would be the bass drum which for me wasn't as punchy as I would like it. However, the kit I was trying out was a 20" bass drum kit because I prefer to keep my toms as low as possible since im a short little guy. Can't really speak for the 22" kick but maybe it's better than the 20".
At the end of the day I would say its a great kit, especially for the price and I can't stress how much I liked the snare that came with it. Although, keeping in mind that drum shells are very simple concept, (wood, heads, tuning lugs) any intermediate kit is going to sound good or can be configured to sound good. With a well-known brand such as Mapex you can't go wrong. Also, the mapex armory is also considered an intermediate kit by Mapex and I think that the increase in the price is for the extra floor tom that generally comes with the armory (atleast here in the UK) and the fact that it is a hybrid shell as maple wood tends to be a bit more pricey.
Hope this helped! Good luck making your final decision
