Looking for new kit with vintage sound?

.... but what would the construction and bearing edges be considered on those drum sets. I want a warm round tone, what can I look for to achieve that sound?

Others here can, and have, told you better, but from what I've read, ideally you should be looking for 3 ply with re-rings and a round over edge.

Out of your price range, but the Gretsch Broadkaster would probably work for you: http://www.gretschdrums.com/broadkaster/
Withing your price range, as others have said, I don't think you'll do better than the Ludwig Club Date: http://www.ludwig-drums.com/clubdate_se.php
(click the 'shell info' tab).

Vintage stuff - I have no clue really. You'll have to re read the thread for other's ideas.

Here you go. This price will probably change tomorrow morning. I've been watching Amazon for a while and they've been moving the price downward daily. It'll get to a point, then they'll put it back up to $1899. How far down it drops before they either sell out or put them back to $1899 is anybody's guess.

You have no idea how close to reality that is sometimes. Bolt on a hobby router table, Asian hardware catalogue, & online badge maker, & you're there! (& yes, I know a piece of glass is a really poor surface plate for checking bearing edges, not that it matters of course ;) ;) ;)

Keller will route the bearing edges for you for a nominal charge. I think an angle of 35 degrees is about what those 60's kits used, and many were 3 ply maple or birch. I'm not sure when round over edges were predominate.

Thanks - links are always helpful when you reference something.
Otherwise someone doesn't know if it's B.S. or not.
The one in your link seems like a decent deal.

Great responses. I have decided to just keep my Slingerland's and save for the future. I want this kit for the purposes of playing jazz, although I have played for about 16 years I have only dabbled lightly in jazz. As I save I'm just going to look around and play what I can. I like the idea of the Bebop sized kit with a 14x18 bass drum, 8x12 tom, and a 12x14 floor tom. I love the Gretsch Broadkaster and several other custom companies drums but I just need to play around on them and see what works for me. Again thanks for all the suggestions and I'm sure i'll be blowing this forum up soon for more answers!

About 6 months ago, there was some huge blowout clearance. New NCs in bop configs were going for as low as $800. You occasionally find clearance kits. I usually just hit google/shopping to find them.

^Example of $1000 NC -- I have no affiliation, and no idea if they're even a legit shop.

I saw that too. I think this site might be a scam. The return and other policies on the site have a number of typos and dont look like they're written by some on with English as a first language...lol. I tried contacting them via email and never received a response. Funniest thing is one description for an item stated it was for use in vasectomy procedures. That's just weird.

For Jazz, people especially favor Gretsch, Ludwigs, and I would throw in C&C and the new George Way drums. If money is no object, Guru. Frankly, about any appropriately sized set can work.
