Drilling A Hole In your Thumb

OK, this is sort of a strange event.

I am building a new room (man cave).
On Saturday the impact driver slipped off the screw and I drilled a big hole in my left thumb. OUCH !
Blood all over.
I almost went to the emergency room, but I simply wrapped it up in a band aide. Still hurts when I use it.

The next day (yesterday) when I rehearsed it did not hurt too much to play because I play traditional grip. So I don't have to press on the stick with my thumb.

But OH MAN !
When I cross stick it really hurts. And I have a gig in a couple of days.

It so happens that about a week ago I purchased a Rim Riser. One of these.

It was only $18 and it is supposed to help with cross sticking. I just thought it would be fun to try.

The Rim Riser was delivered today. And oh boy, now I can easily cross stick with my hurt thumb. I can use my fingers to raise and lower the stick.

Here is some good advice: Don't drill holes in your thumb or fingers.

ouch, man. be careful next time

Such injuries are a bummer. Rim riser's a good little solution though.

I cut my thumb badly a couple of weeks ago. It's still not right (should have gone for stitches really). By coincidence though, I've had a playing lull, so perversely useful :( I was more bummed about the blood that splattered all over the shell I was working on. Luckily, it was already sealed :)

Hey Andy, Wow yeah, in your business you have to be careful, I just realized you are probably using dangerous equipment all the time.

I'm actually very careful usually. The offending item on this occasion was a specialist drill bit. I was changing collets (not on the machine) & the drill momentarily stuck in the collet, just long enough for me to run my hand down the drill flutes :( All our drill bits & cutters are very high end (usually German or Swiss) and are surgically sharp.

What a nifty bit of kit - I'll bear it in mind for when I get bitten on my thumb!

Hope you both heal soon, gentlemen.

I have had a similar accident when I was working on my bassdrum riser. Managed to slice up about half a centimeter(I'd say that's roughly 1/40 of a banana for you americans) of skin/flesh, pretty deep, right next to the nail! It happened roughly 3 months ago, and I still have a bit of tingly, pain-like numbness in that area, but nothing that affects my drumming. Playing matched grip was out of the question for a good 2-3 weeks after the incident.

OP, I wish you a fast recovery!

If I ever buy a Guru kit, I expect some blood on the shells! Nothing says "A job well done" like a good blood stain. ;)

I broke my left thumb and had 3 pins surgically inserted and a cast over the top of that mess. I rehearsed with my band through the entire 6 week healing period. I think that due to drums, I actually healed quicker because of strength and flexibility in the hands, wrist, etc. I will take a pass on trying to play after drilling a hole in my finger though...

We are, where we are, on the evoloutionary scale, because we have an opposeable thumb.Take care of them.I can't tell you how many times,I've hit my thumb with a hammer, while trying to put in a nail.

That sucks, bro.

At least you have a sort of work-around. I'm glad the Rim Rise is working for you. I have thought about trying one out before but wondered if was really a necessity.

BTW, pics or it didn't happen!! Anyone can put a bandage on their hand and claim they "drilled a hole in their thumb". :)

A DNA "barcode" to ensure it's genuine Guru product. "Accept no imposters. Always check for the Guru bloodstain of authenticity." ;^)

Thanks.

I did not want to get too graphic. But OK if you insist.
This post is for Brady only, all others turn away.

Here is how it looks this morning. Still bleeding after four days.

Yeah....that's sick, dude.

Thanks though. I did ask for it. :)

(I kinda have issues.)

BTW, a good cleaning of that wound might not be a bad idea there.

As well as considering going to the hospital of it doesn't get better soon. If it's still an open wound after four days, the likelihood of infection is pretty high. I'd seriously get that looked at.

I hope you heal up soon.

Been there, done that. A couple times a year, I get nailed somewhere by a bit tip. Most carpenters have the hands of a blind man. All scarred up.

Anybody that uses a screw gun often will have at some point done that to some degree. The impact is even worse because of the jump start. In fact, I did it slightly yesterday :)

Not from a screw gun but, this is my worst thumb injury to date.It git pinched between two pieces of metal and ripped apart. That whole flap was just peeled back and ended up falling off. I couldn't even look at it until the following day. I just taped it up tightly and went back to work on a backhoe. After 3 years, the nerves have not regenerated.

You could develop a new series: 'Andy's Bloodline - finished with real blood from the genuine Andy' or 'Blood splatter'
you may end up only making one, but I'm sure it'll be bloody awesome
