Inspiration and influence are kind of odd with me, and not always the same thing.

I think of inspiration as someone who makes me want to play or play like them, and then influence as someone whose playing I have actually incorporated into my own, whether consciously or unconsciously.

For instance, I hadn't listened to the Moody Blues in decades, and then I checked out some of their old stuff I used to like and damned if I hadn't been copping Graeme Edge....

Ringo Starr
Jeff Porcaro
Hal Blaine
Joao Palma (first two Brasil '66 albums and Jobim and others after that)
Elvin Jones
Gene Krupa
Zig Modeliste
Brant Bjork

Here are a few drummers who've inspired me, and some will probably draw more than a few blank stares. I'm mostly into prog rock but also enjoy classic and hard rock, but I don't get into metal, in the modern sense. I love it when drumming blends emotions & dynamics with creative, unorthodox rhythms. The drummers I'm inspired & influenced by most, would be to drums what David Gilmour, Carlos Santana, Steve Rothery are to guitars.

Ian Mosley - Marillion
Steve Negus - Saga
Albert Bouchard, Rick Downey - Blue Öyster Cult
Scott Rockenfield - Queensryche
Danny Carey - Tool
Neil Peart - Rush

Favorite female drummer: Hilary Jones

Thanks for breaking down the stats. The big vote getters are not so suprising but some of the single vote getters I thought would have more.

Examples Dodds Persip Webb Higgins

Perhaps it's just demographics. Time moves on and generations arrive and pass.

I was raised within 20 miles of Levon Helm. He was a good friend and could lay down a groove u could fall off into. The most nervous I have ever been was a gig where he was standing about 10 ft. behind me .

- Neil Peart (not the equal of Bonham or Buddy, but I like his playing best)
- John Bonham (the greatest rock drummer)
- Buddy Rich (extreme talent and facility; my take away about buddy more than anything else is how he inserted himself into the engine room of the band and commanded the motion...he was really in there communicating, reacting and directing....very musical in the Jazz setting)

Just because there aren't any good "new post" right now:
1. Tomas Haake (Meshuggah)
2. Billy Rymer (TDEP)
3. Sean Reinert (Cynic, Death)
4. Gene Hoglan (SYL, Death)
5. Matt Halpern (Periphery)

Actually met Matt when Periphery came to town. Super nice guy. Surprised I didn't see him on the list anywhere.

The following are the top 5 drummers that have had the biggest impact on me stylistically as a drummer in order:

Josh Freese - Easily my favorite drumming idol. Freese isn't the fastest or most technically skilled on the planet, but he is very skilled. His best talent I would say is his ability to seamlessly adapt to any artist any sound and contribute drums that perfectly fit their style. There is a reason Josh Freese is one of the most sought after session drummers in the world.

Favorite drum track - It's a tie between "The Outsider" and "Judith" by A Perfect Circle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KO3l733WRN0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTgKRCXybSM

Dom Howard - I got my first drum kit my freshman year of high school and immediately began teaching myself. During these formative years, my favorite band was Muse. I played my first couple shows with my friends at the annual high school talent show playing all Muse covers. During those years, all of my go-to grooves and fills were pretty much Dom Howard stuff.

Favorite drum track - "Stockholm Syndrome" by Muse
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXN9acC9edU

Dave Grohl - Easily one of the most influential rock drummers of the past 30 years. I love his combination of power drumming with groove and tasteful phrasing.

Favorite drum track - "No One Knows" by Queens of the Stone Age
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s88r_q7oufE

Jerome Dillon - Nine Inch Nails is my favorite band of all time so pretty much all of their drummers should be on this list. Jerome wasn't the best from a technical standpoint(that would be Freese) but his unique style has certainly left it's mark on me. The thing I take away most from Jerome is his frequent use of a left side floor tom for an alternative back beat, creative accents and syncopation, reminiscent of the way many drummers use a side snare.

Favorite drum track - "Just Like You Imagined" by Nine Inch Nails
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6P_YISMJ4sQ

Jose Pasillas - Incubus was another favorite of mine during my formative high school years and I took a lot from this funky drummer.

Favorite drum track - "Wish You Were Here" by Incubus
