Is it late for me? (Drum starter)

Hey everyone,

I'm almost 18 years old and I'm wanting to get started with drums. I am planning to take it to a high level, so I can be part of a band one day or maybe form my own band.

I'm concerned about my age, is it too late for me to learn drumming?

I'm afraid its over for you. 18 is 81 in drummer years. All learning pretty much stops at the age of 20, so not much one can do in 2 years. Except maybe master Swiss triplets, but then you wouldn't really know what to do with them.

Sorry to be the one to break the bad news to ya, bud. Try skateboard.

I agree with aydee ;-)
Man you didn't start at age 7? Forget it then!!

(Hahaha, just kiddin'.)

Master Yoda would say you are too old to begin the training ;)

Dude, look around you, there are people of all ages picking up things they've always wanted to do. At the age of 18, you may give up it up before you're 30. No it is not too late. Just commit and do it right!

Get a teacher. Practice a lot. An hour a day for 6 months will have you past most of the bar band players you see.

Definitely not! I started when I was 10 and I'm 16 now but I know people like my Dad who started when they were 39 and my Dad didn't start taking formal guitar lessons til he was 41 and he's 43 now.

Never too old to learn anything!

NO!

What's that line from the Kink's song- "And when they ask me how you dance, I say that you dance real close."

Although aydee's answer is a close second ;-)

...Try skateboard.

... that's even worse, you're definitely too old for that and you might get injured as well, forget that too, try pottery, you should be safe there ;-))

... just kidding :) ...man, get yourself a kit and start playing, you're never ever too old to start learning an instrument :))

No way dude, i started when I was 19, I play and teach as a profession. You can do it if you have the time and motivation to practice. You can achieve a hell of lot in a few years. Good luck.

Age has nothing to do with learning and vice versa. The flame is burning inside of you, keep it alive and start up some drumming...RLRLRLRL...RRLLRRLL...RLRRLRLL.

Cheers!

Soooo jealous that you get to start at that age. I am 37 and am really fu#ing pissed that I wasted the time prior to about a yera and a half ago when I started.

Go drum dude. Practice your face off and kick ass.

As far as i'm conderned you're still a kid.

I started at 33 and plan on taking it far and I will. My focus is mainly skills for personal enjoyment and getting a more varied teaching job because my social priorities are a little different than in my teens, but at your age you got plenty of time to do anything any way you want.

I you stay healthy and live to be 100 in the end you got more practice and playing time than someone who started at 7 and died in their 60s. Another thing is that when you start at an older age you might take things more seriously and develop good practice habbits a lot faster.

Yeah, it's a bit late. Seems that the best players started as toddlers. Still, some people pick it up really quickly.

I am planning to take it to a high level, so I can be part of a band one day or maybe form my own band.

Believe me, you don't need to play at a high level to be in a band ...

Hi Mate,

I have been playing drums for years but nothing major or fantastic.

Suddenly a marriage bust-up, time on my hands and I have really got stuck in. I am 37 and nothing fantastic as a drummer but loving it. Playing in a couple of bands and doing OK.

To answer your question,NO it is not too late to take up drums. Just get stuck in.

It's great fun, it is a positive hobby to be involved in.

Enjoy.

Hey, ageadm I hope we didnt scare you off, with all this goofiness. There's a bunch of wierdos on this site ( yours truly included.. ), but they are nice wierdos and mean well.

I hope you start playing drums and get bitten by the bug. Its the nicest feeling in the whole world. Do it. Good luck.

Never too late! I picked up the drums seriously at 18 (I'd dabbled a bit before that, but got sick of it) and five years later... well, I'm in a band, playing regularly, posting here and loving it!

As people have already said, just practice regularly. Broaden your musical mind by listening and watching as much as you can, and learn about gear and techniques through the wonderful people here... oh, and find a group of people to play with (who are better than you and so will stretch your playing). That way you'll be a well-rounded drummer in no time!
