hate my 12" tom..sounds dead..

i'm rehearsing last night on my set (mapex saturn walnut/birch) and i'm hitting my 12" TOM, but deadness comes out every freaking time. i've tuned it over and over again. i've changed heads constantly. i've even sent it to my 5star drumshop and had the bearing edges checked out. nothing works..i ended up putting my 8" gretsch renown maple tom in its place..any advice..?
 
You said you've changed heads constantly, what have you tried so far?

Remo Ambassador or Emperor?
Evans G1 and G2?
 
Try pulling the reso head off. Tune the top head to the tone you are after. Then put the reso head on and play with the tunings. Sometimes taking variables out of the situation helps narrow down the issue.
 
changed from remo emperors batters, clear ambassadors reso to aquarian response 2 batters, classic clear bottoms. i've done all i can with this tom. i think imma just burn the shell..
 
Have you checked the drum tuning bible for tuning advice?
