Late 80s Early 90s TAMA Rockstar with black shell interior??

I bought this kit from a pawn shop for $40 yesterday because it needs a number of different parts, all new heads and a serious cleaning!
I did a little research and dated it to 1989, which if I'm correct would make it a first generation Tama Rockstar kit.

My question is about the inside of the shells being black, is that the infamous Tama Zola Coating? I've got a late 80s Swingstar tom with zola coating but it's gray not black!??!?

Once I tear them down and clean them up I'll post better pictures, MAYBE a video if you play your cards right!!

No, that's not Zolacoat. Its just black spray paint. Rockstars were built with cheap wood to keep their price point low. I know because I own a set from 1993. The black paint is just to mask the ugly wood (ie. not very well matching color or grain from piece to piece). They may have been able to source some nicer looking wood starting in the 90's which is why they went with natural interiors instead of painted.
