First drum set for function band.

Wow that's a good deal, I don't mind straying away from the major brands but I've never even heard of Istanbul, do they produce some good cymbals?

They make some wonderful cymbals. Have a search around this site; there's a lot of information about Istanbul on here. Also, here's a couple of links to check out:

http://www.istanbulcymbals.com/

and a review of the Xist series

Have a look on YouTube too. There are lots of videos of Istanbul cymbals for you compare. Just bare in mind that there are two different companies operating under the Istanbul brand name: Istanbul Agop and Istanbul Mehmet

Here's one to get you started:

It's in Polish I think but the cymbals sound the same :p

Thanks guys, I already did my research and I even found the same links that you found.

I think I'm gonna go ahead and buy them. :)

Can't decide on brilliant or traditional though.

Check out this link mate, seems to be about personal preference.

Also, I know that you've almost decided on the Pearl kit, but Drum Shop had a few kits in the January sale. If you buy the cymbals there, ask them what they have left out of the sale.

From this link ---> http://www.drumshop.co.uk/clearance.php

no. 47 the Premier Genista is a quality kit at another great price and no. 36. Gretsch Catalina Club might be worth a look.

I don't work for Drum Shop, honest! They just seem to be unbeatable for value on new gear. Of course used is always another option as others have said and there are definite bargains to be had, just finding them isn't always straightforward.

You really do like drumshop, don't you? :p

To be honest I'm pretty set on the VBX for some reason, there's just something about it that I like, those are some really good deals though. Although I'm buying the cymbals now, I don't plan on buying the kit for a couple of weeks so this will give me plently of time to think and research. Thanks for all the help again Turks!

I sure hope those drum bags are good enough, I can't resist the price.

This thread is getting so long you might as well call it a giggers buying guide. ;)

I’d look into Mapex Meridians – great drums and in your price range. However, the Sonors and Gretch drums are going to be a great sound as well. I’m just partial to Mapex. :)

Sonor and Mapex are almost the same sort of thing and some are made in the same factories as each other ;-)

They are a less well known version of zildjian and they are cheaper cause lots of people will buy zildjian cause they are well known so Istanbul have to keep their prices down to atract customers. Same sort of sound as Istanbul was started when the old zildjian K factory was shut down and the workers made Istanbul to earn money.

Basically zildjian cymbals but cheaper :)
