Middle HiHat Set Up with DW 9550 Remote HiHat

Hi everybody,

I just did a new setup with my HiHat in front of me. It allows me to play an open handed style, it gets more symmetric and is much more ergonomic to play.
To get a setup like this "DWs 9550 Remote HiHat" was the only choice for me. I think a cable HiHat would not have that good feeling and I believe it also won't last as long.
So pictures say more than 1000 words, here they are:

So what do you think about my new setup?

Is the left floor tom an old bass drum? I notice a wooden reso hoop.

Love it! It makes so much sense. I had toyed with that hi-hat, but couldn't bring my self to spending the $300+ on one. It'd be nice if DW would put a set of legs on the hi-hat stand so it would be free-standing and not have to get clamped to something bigger. That would be cool.

Nice kit! I'd love to try a setup like that, but I play on so many house kits that I don't want my style and playing to depend on a very specialised setup. Looks like a very comfortable way to play though.

It's also got claws on a regular flanged hoops, and you can see the tom mount in the first pic. So I'm going to go with "yes" :)

Yamaha WHS 860S for me ..... nice kit ... looks a lot like mine ...

Do you play hats mainly with your left or right hand?
As for me, both ... my right hand has always been a little stronger ....
...but this set-up allows me to do some left hand snare, hat, ride stuff .... while my right hand works the 13, 16 tom combo .... something that can't be done with the more "traditional" positions, very easy.

Hi, well it is actually a bass drum, but not an old one. For Jazz applications i use it as a normal bass drum!
The claws on the top rim are a self production of mine. They were necessary because a bass drum has a little different diameter than a tom and so the holes for the srews in the hoop did not match with the lugs.

I play my hats manly with the right hand! You know. I love grooves with on handed 16th notes on hats or ride, and with this setup this works perfect.

By the way, i don't think i will have problems to play on conventional setups!

Yes, the hat is really expensive! I also toyed around a while. Now the music store i got it from sold it's exhibit model and it was a bit cheaper!

Legs on the hats would not probably be the best idea. I have now a 22" bass drum, and the space between the hat and the bassdrum is less than 1/2". In my application it works perfect...in other setups legs maybe would be usefull.

Here's mine. I went with the hats under the toms. you would be amazed at how relaxed your shoulders are and how centered you feel while playing. you can see the left bass pedal at the bottom and get a feel for the angle I sit at. the hats are directly in front of me and I can play them with either hand without a problem and even do some very interesting hat/snare transitions without really thinking about it because my hands never cross. I love it.
