here's that "Walk On The Wild Side" track from "Bashin', The Unpredictable Jimmy Smith" that was referenced. Oliver Nelson's big band in the studio 1962

Listen to this amazing guy on drums

this album was my first exposure to Ed Shaughnessy (and Oliver Nelson) (prior to that I saw a photo of Ed in "Avedis Zildjian cymbal setups of favorite drummers" in the 50s had a face but didn't put the sound to the man till years later) This monster was on the radio and ripped through NYC in the day

enjoy a master

RIP Ed

A few years ago I was standing in line to meet Ed and get an autograph. I had a drumhead that I wanted him to sign so that I could hang it on the wall in my drum room. When I was finally standing in front of the man (with a very big, dopey smile on my face), I was amazed by his presence and his energy. He shook my hand and reached for the drum head, asking me what my name was so that he could write something personalized. I asked him if it would be ok with him if he just signed his name. He looked up at me with a suspicious gaze, I'm sure thinking that I didn't want the drumhead personalized because I was some huckster who was just going to sell it on eBay and make a buck off of the reputation of a great man.

The drummer seated next to Ed overheard our conversation and looked up from what he was doing. He looked at me, and then turned to Ed and said, "It's ok Ed, he's cool." Ed shrugged and smiled, and signed my drumhead with just his name.

The other drummer was Jon Schwartz. And I still have the signed drumhead.

Goodbye, Ed. You rock.
