Hi folks!
Almost two years ago I bought a TAMA Superstar Hyperdrive kit (8"/10"/12"/14"/16"/22"), but I was too naive/inexperienced at the time to actually "choose" a good kit based on sound, preference, and what I wanted on a drum kit.
Its a extremelly well built kit, but now that I have practiced my ass off for 2 years and I can actually PLAY it, and evenmore, now that I actually KNOW what kind of drum sound I like and dont like, Im facing a problem:
The snare is exactly what I wanted. Dry and clear, loud and bright. But ALL the toms on my Tama sounds extremelly PLASTIC, really paperish and almost like playing on many cardboard boxes, without the nice fat ressonance they boxes would produce!
I actually bought this kit because I LOVED the sound of the snare drum on the drum store when I checked the kits available, and to this day, I still love the sound of this snare. Time, reading, youtube, drum mags, and specially THIS forum thought me how to get the sound I want from my snare, and Im even more happy today than I was two years ago.
But the rest of the drums really annoy me. They sound HORRIBLE, believe me. I even practive with a t-shirt covering all the toms so they can produce a lower more "drum like sound" instead of the bright "cleck" they make.
I have tried tons of tunnings, and I cant get rid of that weird "stick to the plastic" kind of sound they produce.
I have a few assorted heads I bought over the years, like ECS2, Hydraulid, G2, etc, in various sizes (no full set), but never "installed them", because I got a mixed set when I ordered them: 360 and non 360. Ive been trying for months to trade them all for the same type over at Evans but so far no luck.
I have never changed the stock heads because I was only practicing, and covering them with cloth made the sound more bearable, and less loud. But now I would like to get some real tom sound.
Even though I learned a LOT about how drums works and how to play them over the last years, my knowledge about head influencing the sound is close to zero.
So, my question to you folks is: is it possible that changing the heads will COMPLETELY change the sound of my Toms??
Is it possible that new heads would give me a "boooom" ressonating low sound I want compared to the "pleck plack plonck" sound I get today??
By the way, Im a VERY light hitter. I use a Steve Gadd Vic Firth exclusively, and I like to keep things quiet, instead of loud and annoying. Im definitely NOT a rock drummer.
Any comments, please??
