Ive never heard a Ludwig Cent but ive just recently got a limited edition Gretsch Renown Maple and boy its a lovely kit! The sweetness of the high tom and the big punchy 16" floor tom is just great.
So im all for the Gretsch but ive never heard the Ludwig so thats abit biased.
The renowns are about on par with the classic maples for that matter. It depends on the sound your wanting, to me Gretsch have a brighter sound and are probably more consistent, Ludwigs seem to have more meat to them. I'd like to hear what others think about between the classic maples and the renowns, not to discount the Centennials, but Gretsch did knock one out of the park with those.
