Request: Go to the local store and tell us which 5 wood snares they have in stock, so we can make an informed choice.

Here's what one store has to offer for snares that are $200 or less:

You'll have to sort by ' shell material', by scrolling down on the left side, to see the different types of wood.

The only one of those I have is the Stage Custom, and I like it a lot.
They came out with a new model this year and it has some upgrades and a price drop.

This is the older one that I have: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/yamaha-2013-stage-custom-birch-snare-drum
and this is the new one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/drums-percussion/yamaha-stage-custom-birch-snare/j11150

There were some videos posted at the beginning of the year that used this snare with the new kit.
It sounded pretty good, but I'd have to dig for the video.

It's possible to find a good sounding wood snare for under $200.
You may have to tweak it a bit, but that's all part of the game.

Honestly, would any new wood snare in the sub-$200 range be any better than a stock snare?

While I do not know if that is the case, I was certainly unimpressed with the options MF presented. They were indeed intermediate-level stock snare options, with some 'signature series' stock snares. I'd want to hear the Pork Pie offerings, but was left wanting when playing their metal offering...

FTM, I don't know what I'd take home... I'd really just buy a used Ludwig maple or the matching Renown snare from Grunt.

Your parameters are under $200, new, wood, 13 or 14".

No mention of if you've got a drum set, or if you have a snare that you're using now for comparison purposes

Not a lot to choose from in that range, but I'm sure you can find something.
My current favorite snare was $200 new.
But it's metal, not wood.

For the OP - here's a couple more that might be worth your while to check out, if possible:

I've tried this^^^^ one, and it sounds good to me for the price.

I haven't tried these^^^^, but I've got a Pearl snare (metal) in that price range, that sounds good.
