I have a question about the bassdrum sizes.
I'm looking for a bassdrum with a very deep and powerfull kick.
what sizes would be good for that?
should I look for 24 of 26 " or should I go smaller?

22" but get it deeper!! i got deeper ones and the are nuts everyone alway compliments on them!!

Diameter is what affects pitch: bigger is lower.

Adding depth to a 22 can add resonance, but it can also make the drum feel sluggish compared to shallower drums. If the music you play only requires you to stomp on 1 & 3 that's probably okay. If you need greater control and articulation you may like shallower better.

It's worth remembering that the standard bass drum used to be 22x16--sometimes even 22x14. With the larger diameters it was even more common for the depth to be shallow. Bonham most often used a 26x14--low, fat, but articulate.

i like deep kicks...but im gonna have to go with a bigger drum here...

i have a 24x17, and i love it to death...it is as deep sounding as i want it...if it were anymore...it would be to much..ha

and, i would go with the bigger kick rather than a 22x20. cause, that is a pain in the butt to haul around...

Bigger diameter = lower pitch
Deeper depth = less focus

My 22x18 drum sounds great in my studio (smaller space) because it sounds like it's a big drum, but when I take it to a larger venue, the lack of focus becomes apparent and it sounds more "clicky" and "echoey" than I would like it to.

My 20x14 drum sounds okay in my studio, but once I get it to a larger venue, the punch and focus really carry and the boom it creates sounds bigger than my 22x18. It "plays the room" a bit better.

I attribute the "bigness" of the 20x14 to it's shallow depth, which allows the fundamental pitch to become heard over the reverb-like resonance within the shell. It makes the drum sound more like a punch in the gut than a balloon popping in a gymnasium.

Whatever size diameter you choose to get, try to get a shallower depth. That's my suggestion.

Good post Caddywampus. I've always played 22" but really want to try a 20", For transport and setup reasons and now for the reasons you're stating. Definetely want to keep it under 18" depth also.

The sizes I've owned. 20x14, 22x14, 22x16, 22x17, 24x14, 26x14, 28x14. My favorite....26x14. Big drums go boom. My kit right now (project) 22, 12, 13, 16 Rogers XP-8 "Big R". That'll do for now, but at some point in time I'll add a 26x14 to it. A man can never own too many drums. Go drive a 24 or a 26, if you can. If you dig it, cool, jump on a set. You can always downsize/add a smaller matching kick later.

I've also owned a couple of 22x14 kicks that sounded pretty punchy, too. Those extra 4 inches added to the depth make a lot of difference. With the 22x14, I could get away with a non-ported reso head, but it's harder to do that with a 22x18.

ah thanks caddywuumpus that was exactly what I needed!!
I think I'll go for a or 24x18 or 26x16 or maybe even 26 x18
cause that is what I found on a few of the kits I was looking at.
thanks guys
