Luckily I'm not too worried about the price right now. I've enjoyed acrylic kits when I've played them, but would want wood for a long term kit.

With out too much looking around, I found the Ludwig Legacy Classic series http://www.ludwig-drums.com/drumkits/legacyclassic.php 3-ply, but they have a reinforcement ring.
Honestly, when you get that thin reinforcement rings may be necessary just to keep the damn things in round.
