Default Funk & Blues Kit Revamp -d.c.drummer

Since I last posted my stuff (http://drummerworld.com/forums/showt...d=1#post162683), my kit has shrunk dramatically, Ive upgraded and bought a lot of things and I am generally happier with it.

I am now playing in a funk and blues band so i have changed my kit accordingly. It's a simple 4 peice ( + aux. snare sometimes) with a decent amount of cymbals.

Drums: Pearl Export
-22'" Bass
-8", 10" & 14" Toms

Snares:
-Tama Starclassic G Maple 14"x6" 13 ply snare (my baby)
-Pork Pie Little Squealer 12" ( the bane of my existence)

Cymbals: Zildjian K and K Customs (w/ one exception)
-14" K Mastersound Hats
-14" K Custom Fast Crash
-18" K Med-Thin Crash
-18" Sabian Vault Crash (so much better than an A custom. I had to go Sabian on this one)
-20" K Constantinople Med-Thin Prototype Ride
-20" K Custom Ride (so sweet sounding)

Hope you like.
......................Joe.

EDIT: And just to make everyone a little greener, i must tell you that all of those cymbals (except my K custom ride) were under $150 used.

GORGEOUS. I really like the tom setup, and the cymbals are beauties. I may have to try this setup in the future.

Thanks. I stole the tom set up from JoJo Mayer. It allows me to play with a 4 peice feel and when i need the extra note for a 3 tom fill i can do a RR..LL..RR type of deal and get all three notes.

What's wrong with the little squealer? Tuning issues?

IM looking into a small snare and that is one of the possibilities.

It couldnt hold to tension if it came with a handle. Its decent snare, but the lugs slip like crazy, so its best to invest in some screw locks to hold the tuning. Go for a Pearl Popcorn snare, or a black panther 12". Better quality.

That is a really professional looking dude. Keep it up, looks great.\

Edit- no wonder it looks so professional. I just realized its pretty much what Jojo has, and he has one of my favorite setups out there.

Oh My God, Those cymbals are so freaking nice! The Setup is very cool, is that normaly how they setup in a blues, funk band? I've never played funk/blues ;) Those cymbals are orgasmic, aspecially the ride, man does that look freaking nice! And I feel you on the Vault crash, since I'm a Sabian Guy!

aw man, NICE setup! im feeling it, same sort of feel i go for, size wise! Except my kick is 20"! its funny, as ive recently switched opinions similarly to what you say - i feel sabian crashes are better than zildjian crashes, but rides, hats, and FX - zildjian is the way forward! Im buying new cymbals at the moment, gonna get a 16" evolution crash & 16" vault crash. what is the vault like?
Also, im debating between the 20" k ride, and 20" k Custom ride, like yours. How is the custom one, im so stuck!
GREAT kit man, seriously!

Peace,
Richard vdB

Sweet. That's the one!

Really good looking. I am going to set mine up like that again, when my new heads come. I really like playing that configuration.

the vaults are soo, smooth and glassy. Full sustain, med in volume. If you play more acoustic based stuff, (jazz, light rock, blues ect.) i would go for the K ride. if you play more electronic stuff (rock, pop, r&b, ccm) i would go for the custom. go to the zildjian website and check out who plays each cymbal. Apart from playing it in person, that should give you the best insight on whats the best for you.

Blues? Yes. Funk? No. Funk kits usually are ≥ 5 pieces.(technically mine is a 5 peice, but its a 4 at heart.)

thankyou very much for the advice! i dunno, the k custom ride just sounds a bit too heavy for my liking, i want something suitable for R&B and funky rock stuff, but i want it to be quite crashable too, you know? You any suggestions? or even recordings of your setup would rock! Thanks again man!

i dont have any recording gear =( but i will tell you that if you are looking for something crashable, you're more in the market for a traditional finish cymbal. the k custom ride is pretty heavy. I think the K Custom High Definition or K Custom Dark ride would be good for you.

The way you have those cymbals setup, together with the rest of the kit, another example of a kit I wish I could sit at for an hour or so. Joey

Yeah, can just agree with the others: Cool. Cool. oh, and beautiful. You know, I see so many beautiful kits here on board and I`m often so curious how they would feel for me...and especially these cymbals. Praise that bronze.

How do you get Prototypes btw? Can you get them normally at a store or are they limited?

Karl

Any store that gets a lot of stock from Zildjian should have them roll in once a while. Or you can got to a Zildjian show (unlikely) or you can see it a second-hand shop and snag it (like me). But i've seen more at drums stores in my area that have a large cymbal inventory.

I used a J1 Etched for a fat sound or jazz sound. For all purpose music i use a G1. For gospel, in which i need a tight pop, I use an Evans Super Tough. The G1 is my fav though.
