I really need to take some time and get some sexy photos up of these. But here's a quick overhead for now:

I found out my neighbour builds stave drums as a hobby, so I paid him a visit and ended up buying the first kit he ever built. I paid a ridiculously good price for them as they had some minor cosmetic flaws (well hidden though) that came with the learning process. They sound absolutely incredible.

Technically it's a 5 piece, where I swap back and forth between a 10" or 12" rack depending on the gig. Usually played as a 12", 14", 20". The snare is a DW performance series, but I'll be picking up a matching snare from him eventually.

Cymbals are:
K Custom 14" Special Dry Hi hats
K Custom 20" Dry Ride
K Constantinople 20" Medium Ride
K Constantinople 20" Light High Ride

Nice. So I take it you're not a fan of the swirly finishes? I really liked that orange swirl when it came out. I saw it in person at Pro Drum and it's incredible.

I'm a huge fan of the swirly finishes, love the black swirl but really would have been happy with orange or blue swirl too. Ended up with the "dark wood" finish because I got an amazing deal on the kit (less than half price) as the shop had them marked for clearance. I actually debated getting the kit initially because the finish wasn't the one I really wanted but just couldn't pass up such a great deal - I have to say I really like the finish now - photos don't really do it justice.

Very nice. How do you like that 20" Dry Ride? I keep seeing them used at GC for decent prices and am thinking of getting one. I have a K Custom Dark ride now and want something a little less washy to complement it.

Regarding 4-piece setups...I keep trying to make the 5 piece work for me (2 up offset to the left, one down or one up two down) but I keep coming back to the one up, one down. Things just don't feel as crowded.

Mine.

Happy New Year.

Paul.

I can definitely understand why they would end up on the used market. It is a fantastic sounding ride on its own, and demos really well. BUT it's super quiet and super heavy so this is one where it really needs to be heard in context with the rest of your kit and cymbals. Low-mid volume jazz WITH STICKS is where it's worth its weight in gold. It has so much mass that it laughs in the face of brushes or rutes trying to make it vibrate. That said, I've used it to great effect playing along to an unamplified acoustic guitar with brushes.

I love mine, because I've figured out how and when to use it (AND have ample opportunity to do so). It truly is at the end of the "dry" spectrum though, so I'm not sure I'd flat out recommend it for someone just looking for a "drier" than something washy like your K Custom Dark. I would recommend taking a K Heavy for a test drive as another option.

Thanks. I'll take that under advisement if I end up looking at buying one.

Looking at these kits, I would really like to thank the guy who came up with White Marine Pearl. It has to be the classiest finish ever. I love wood grain, but when someone comes up with WMP lacquer I'm all over it.

I'll second that........

Me & My 1968 Ludwig's

They started life as a 4 piece (22", 13", 16" & 14" snare). Prior to me owning them someone added the center tom mount and a 12" tom with matching wrap but 80's 7 ply shell, so it sits on the shelf.

The snare is 14" X 6.5" Supraphonic.

I'm guessing they are Downbeats that want to be Hollywood's. I'm looking for a matching 12" tom to match.

There are a few extra holes where the rail mount was but they don't bother me much. It's never going to be collector's kit but it sounds great.

I got bored and went back to the four piece in anticipation of the new Sabian Big and Ugly Apollo 24 inch ride.
