Bob, did you add those two cymbal mounts to the bass drum?
Yes I added them. The kit came with the rail mount and I decided to go full vintage by adding cymbal mounts. I really like those mounts. The modern versions are much better than the ones off the past. They don't slip. I have memory locks on them too.
I think that one plays differently on a kit with bass drum mounted toms and cymbals. It's a Zen thing. The cymbal holders flex slightly and the ride cymbal sound different because of it. The mounted ride also balances the weight of the tom.

You do know that the kick is backwards, right? The best thing about those big ol' 4 spurs is that they made the bass drum reversible....

Yes I do know. That is because I like the tom close and low.
Actually on the brown set has another 8x12 mounted tom . The red set has another 16x22 bass, 9x10 and 11x12 toms.
I like the Bonham set up (as they call it) because I learned from those who played this set up back in the 50's on.

I bought these in 1991 after saving up quite a bit of hard earned money. Long Lug Maple Classic Ludwigs in Blue Shadow. They are beautiful and sound amazing.

I suppose I am now a fan (although I've owned three other Ludwig kits over the years. Here's the rundown:

16x26, 9x13, 16x16, 16x18, 6.5 Supra. Blond maples from 1978-ish. Lovely.

Here it is in its new 'small configuration':

My kit last Saturday night. I only brought one floor tom, just lazy. Another drummer played them a bit. They sound amazing!! 3ply maple early 70's, The toms dont have ludwig lugs, I restored these recently and didnt want to keep buying 8 lugs at a time off ebay. 14x24 inch bass, 10x14 tom, 16x16 floor

So my buddy Todd called me and said "Hey, do you want a drum kit?" and I figured "Why not?". I drove out to his ranch in Temecula and he gave me a 1961 Ludwig Super Classic in Blue Oyster Pearl - along with a 1961 Ludwig Supraphonic and a set of '61 Zildjian 14" Hi hats. The shells and hardware need to be cleaned up a bit but the kit appears to be in very good condition. It's been in storage for years - I started cleaning up the snare as soon as I got home. The kit has a strange relationship with me - I played guitar for years and three different drummers in various bands used that very kit. The kit came to us through the original owner (who purchased it in 1961) - who sold it to one of the guys in my band for a hundred bucks. The kit got passed around (for ridiculously low sums of money because none of the guys who had it knew what it really was) for 15 years until it ended up with me. I got it for free - I just happen to buy and restore vintage drums. I'm pretty good at what I do - when I saw these, I was astonished. They really just need a good cleaning and new heads. This is an amazing gift - I almost felt guilty taking it home. The only condition was that I never get rid of them - and I won't! I'll post more pics when I'm finished restoring them. No pics of the floor tom cause my camera battery died. Also, my camera sucks.
The first pic is the date stamp inside the bass shell - 'APR 13 1961'
The 2nd pic is the inside of the bass shell (I forgot to take pics of the outside! I will soon.)
The 3rd pic is the badge on the snare.
The 4th pic is another view of the snare.
The 5th pic is of the tom.
Sizes - 22X14, 16X16, 13X9, 14X5

So my question is: What heads should I use for an 'authentic' vintage sound?

Here's before and after pics of a 1961 Supraphonic that my buddy Todd gave me!

Before: decades of crud.

After: Mirror shine.

I'm going to re-skin it and put Supraphonic snares on it.
Any suggestions about what type of heads I should use for an authetic vintage sound?

Hey dbf,

I think you've got yourself a COB "Super" there. Pre-serial badge, and crimped snare beds. These are very desirable snares. Personally, I would use a Ludwig snare-side head and a Remo Ambassador for the batter. Enjoy!
