It also is a good rudiment to practice, because after all you get both the single and the double strokes in one package.

Yes, indeed. I started because I couldn't do heel-toe with shoes because of my big feet. So I started playing bare footed, and stuck with it. I even play most gigs barefoot.

You can use fingers to move the stick even in traditional grip. Check out Jojo Mayer's video, he explains everything.
But if you feel Traditional Grip is limiting you, why don't you play matched...

Get rid of the second bassdrum, even if that means being less metal.

Or you might consider getting one of those hihat clamps to fasten your stand to the bassdrum, with the legs closed.
