Re: New Mike Dolbear TV show goes live tonight.

Missed the show, but I've met Mike a few times when he's come to NAMM (specifically the Drumsmith dinner!) and have poked my head into his forum now and again.

Best of luck to him!

Re: When to do Free Gigs and Paid Gigs

The only exposure those bands get is that they'll work for free.

It's a slippery precedent, and a dangerous slope, all part of the unfortunate 'race to zero'.

Re: Ludwig Black Beauty VS Black Magic

The Black Beauty is a great drum, and the Black Magic is a great drum for the price. I will echo the sentiment, let your ears decide. They both have something, and the Black Magic does offer the...

Re: Drum Shields??

Just practicing what many of us preach: do a search! (rather than blindly start a new thread.) I only posted anew because I had a little something to add for future generations. :)

Re: Drum Shields??

Update: I did in fact change my cymbals since I posted this 3 years ago, and have been very pleased with my Paragons. They don't have the biting attack and harmonics that the APX do, but they sound...

Re: Drum Shields??

Sorry, gotta resurrect this from 2012 -

Al & the crew are having the discussion about shields again for the upcoming tour, and I figured I'd search for comments from people already using them....

Re: When to do Free Gigs and Paid Gigs

Exactly. The amateurs and pros are in this together, to the extent that the person doing the hiring doesn't differentiate. that cheapens it for the pros - no matter how excellent they are - and makes...

Re: What if you unwittingly stole someones gig?

Yeah Dre, quit over-analyzing it, or I'll take YOUR gig when I get down there in January!!

Re: What if you unwittingly stole someones gig?

King Tiger nailed it.

I've been offered positions in existing bands for decades, and never once did I feel like I was stealing the former drummer's gig. But I would also never be so presumptuous...

Re: Licensing your drum tracks?

Simplest way to ensure that is to provide excerpts of your songs, the same way iTunes presents only an excerpt of what they want you to buy.

Re: When to do Free Gigs and Paid Gigs

It depends somewhat on the player, what constitutes a gig, and the type of gig it is. In other words, each situation is different.

There's only one 'gig' I'm asked to do for free, and that's the...

Re: "Chameleon" drum selection

I'm not familiar with any of those snares, but I'd say start with one of the 5x14s. Between those wood and metal shells, I think you'll get reasonably close to the sound. Tuning will be more...

Re: Is this "Unprofessional"

Unprofessional on who's part - the drummer's, or the band's?

I think a drummer needs to be prepared, especially on a non-familiar gig. that doesn't mean bring 3 snares and 15 cymbals, but keeping...

Re: Peter Erskine is on the move... again

That's too bad he waited until he was 60! :)

Whether it's DW-Tama, Zildjian-Meinl or whatever, an endorser's credibility/integrity is important, particularly to the company whose products the...

Re: Guidance on Sharpening Up for Recording Slow, Sparse Music

It's just a matter of practicing with a click or loop or sequence. You've already identified your weak spots, so it's just a question of correcting them satisfactorily, and consistently. When you get...

Re: Guidance on Sharpening Up for Recording Slow, Sparse Music

First, literally... relax!

Second, don't play games with the click. I don't know what 16bpm sounds like, but I can assure you, you'll need more than one click every 4 seconds in order to follow...

Re: Advice on Vintage Ludwig Player's kit

Absolutely a player's kit, too many holes, and at least one mod - an improved tom holder (the later version ratchet tilter.) Needs inlays on the BD hoops.

Most important will be the condition of...

Re: Help me choose a second snare drum

It's hard to say on the feel, as the sound we hear fools us into thinking the drum feels that way. Play an e-kit, and you see how different sounds seem to translate into different feels... even...

Re: Help me choose a second snare drum

The overlay goes on in a second or two, and instantly takes the drum's pitch down. No muss, no fuss, much faster than having a 2nd snare standing by just to get a fatter sound. But, as I said, the...

Re: Ludwig Club Date NOT discontinued

I've got the new Club Dates, they're great vintage-sounding drums. Well, at least until the Legacy Mahogany showed up at NAMM!

Re: Help me choose a second snare drum

It's nice to have additional snares for additional sounds, but there's a well-known secret that will take the Acrolite to a really cool place, and possibly affect your choice of 2nd snare (which will...

Re: A Live Music Venue who do it right....

The concepts of treatment and fair pay are subjective. Too many musicians feel an entitlement that somebody owes them a certain payment and respect, simply because the musician took time to learn his...

Re: A Live Music Venue who do it right....

True, not all venues are needlessly harsh to the talent. Sometimes a successful musician will open their own club or restaurant, hire good bands, and pay them decently for their work. They understand...

Re: Is hard to make a living out of jazz? Are there any jobs out there?

Jazz hasn't been much of a money-making proposition for 40+ years. By that I mean, not mainstream enough to support many full-time jazz musicians. In some major markets, the gigs (read: venues) are...
