Re: Question about hand technique on the texas shuffle

I alway thought of a Texas shuffle as the snare is the only thing shuffling. The rest of the limbs do quarter notes. Of course there is no definitive guidelines. Wit both arms shuffling, I call that...

Re: The natural meter challenge!

I try and recapture however it feels in my body to play for one bar (or section).... and then repeat it so it feels exactly the same, and so on. I go on my own steadiness, which isn't spot on...

Re: Peter Erskine moves to Tama...

I'm with you Doc. But there are many many people who look first at brands, gear and the like. Where the real focus is supposed to be on the playing and learning and improvement on the instrument....

Re: Going to shows of a band you got rejected from a good idea?

The big takeaway I'm getting is to not harbor anything negative. Let it roll off you like water from a ducks back. It's simply not in your best interest to be negative. The mature person gladly...

Re: Stage Custom floor toms

I had a set of Indonesians and I'm fairly certain they they were Asian Falkata wood with an outer veneer of birch for looks on the lacquered toms. Looks like birch to me on the first pic. I remember...

Re: Going to shows of a band you got rejected from a good idea?

The more interested you are in them, the better they will like you is my first thought. As long as you are not annoying of course, no dis-respect intended. I got passed over 3 times before I got a...

Re: do i need a hi hat mic?

Hi hats cut through. No need for a separate mic. I like the less mic way too. One overhead, one kick and one snare mic is all I use. The rest is just extra work. I don't like mics too close to my...

Re: Yamaha Rydeen Jazz Kit potential purchase

Here's a vote to skip the Rydeens. You can get better quality drums for the same dollars. Look for drums that specify all maple or all birch. You will automatically do better with these kits. Mapex...

Re: My new "Yes I can play" kit ;)

Bass drum: I want to say it's a Pearl EFX. The lugs are making me doubt myself, but that's my guess.

White rack tom: Looks like a Mapex mydentity tom?

The snare and floor tom I'm stumped.

Re: The natural meter challenge!

Thanks ID. You'd think I'd feel good about that but all I can think of is I was drifting at least half the time lol. I might do this with a straight no frills money beat to see if a beat with less...

Re: The natural meter challenge!

OK I did this. 1 take with a quick and dirty audio only recording. Afterwards, I played it back over the PA with a metronome in my ear for a quick and dirty evaluation.

The tempo started off at...

Re: A new drumming hero emerges!

Well that clears THAT up. I was wondering wtf that was all about. Thanks!

By that logic I would be a beer musician.

Re: The natural meter challenge!

I like the push pull of human time better than "always the exact same" metronome time. My bandleader likes most stuff relentlessly on top, with nothing laid back.

We differ there, in that I like...

Re: Drum setup

I'd keep the 13 for the rack. A 13 on top of a 24" bass drum...I hope you're a big guy. Also a vote for the 6.5 snare. You have big drums. A 5" snare seems mismatched to me.

Re: NAMM 2015 - what do you expect to see?

Right. That's why lacquer is harder.

Re: NAMM 2015 - what do you expect to see?

Lacquer comes from the resin secreted by the Lac bug. So does shellac. Lacquer is harder than shellac.

Which has nothing to do with anything.

Re: DW aquires Gretsch and Latin Percussion...

I know no facts about how they do this. I have no idea what I'm talking about but wouldn't it make sense to have the North American wood shipped to wherever they make them and build them there?...

Re: DW aquires Gretsch and Latin Percussion...

I've often wondered about this myself. Not to mention the labor of packing and shipping...twice! Thank you for saying that out loud. It must be less expensive. Which doesn't add up to me considering...

Re: My "new to me" DW Collectors

I hear ya. Different drums take a while to get to know. I remember when I first got my DW's, I had a hard time tuning them. It was frustrating too, because I dropped all this dough on them. But I got...

Re: Always buy used except for .........

We're talking just drums, right?

Used sticks or heads, but that's a duh. I'd say there's more good deals than ripoffs. But they are both out there. I have no problems with used cymbals, or almost...

Re: Meytal Cohen? She plays, right?

That was the most precious thing ever. Thanks for that.

Matched grip. Not tied at all to playing conventionally. Very avant garde. I get the impression from her performance that the carpet was...

Re: A Badge Stix Would be Proud Of

I miss Sticks being around. I'd like to see him return. He added color. It takes 2 to argue. Just don't become the 2nd argue-er, and there's no issues.
