Re: Can't seem to play fast

A quick thought Tank, German grip is the worst place to be for finger control. Most things when played fast require ever increasing amounts of finger control. I'd ditch German grip, learn French and...

Re: The level system?

Unless you're playing intentionally tight & weird on certain notes in order to manipulate radically different velocities of strokes from the same stick height (and nobody does this), the only way to...

Re: No rudiments taught in marching band?

This varies from program to program to program, state to state etc. We're all generally told that we should know all of the rudiments, but how many really do?

There are way faster & more...

Re: Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

It sounds like you just need a different teacher. I make my students all too aware of their weaknesses and give them specific targeted things to work on to attack the problem. Why else would they...

Hey guys, here's another www.drumworkout.com lesson brought to you with some help from Vic Firth. Here I show you how the free stroke and "Moeller whip & flop" techniques can add musicality, flow and...

Re: John H. Beck: The Snare that Auditioned 1,618 Students

John is a wonderful man, very warm and open hearted. We played a duet together at a KoSA camp a few years back and I really enjoyed it, I felt like he was my Grandpa! I can't say enough good things...

Here's a great way to boost your weaker hand:

Developing French grip with the weaker hand! The main difference between people's strong and weak hand is almost always a matter of finger control, so developing French grip (which is the best grip...

Re: do i need a hi hat mic?

I always have a hi hat mic when I record since people generally expect a hi hat track when I send it off to them. However, I basically never use it in my own mixes--overheads pick it up just fine.

Re: Independence vs learning set patterns

Back to the original question, yes you got it with your summation. Once you've mastered enough coordinated bits then you can switch between them at will in order to seem independent.

Food for...

Re: HELP, permanent beastmode

Volume is a matter of the force put into the drums. Force is mass X velocity squared, so velocity is the way bigger factor. Faster strokes (in terms of stick speed) can easily produce more sound (and...

Re: New Breed for a relative beginner?

It can work for you, but depending on your personality type there may be better options. When I look at New Breed I see 25 years worth of work where it's hard to tangibly measure progress.

Re: How to build up weaker hand?

Amen to learning French grip on the weaker hand! (That's step 7 on my Extreme Hands Makeover on drumworkout.com.) Even if you never directly use it, it does wonders for developing the fulcrum/finger...

Re: Recording advice/tips.

I would ask to get paid by song. If you (& they) nail it like studio vets you'll be in & out in 20 minutes after X amount of set-up/dial it in time. BUT, it sounds like everybody is probably less...

Re: I've had tendonitis in my wrists for the last year and half. I just joined a band. Advice?

It's just a technique issue. if you change your approach(es) to one (or those) which are more agreeable with your body, then you can go ballistic drumming 8 hours a day for life. I've had many...

Re: Different grip on each hand

Having two different versions of matched grips won't be harmful or cause injury, but you will hit limitations for sure. Ultimately you'll want both hands to be be able to play all different positions...

Re: leaving the kick beater on the bass head?

I think we're all more on the same page than it seems. My post was basically defending burying the beater as a viable and good thing, not a lesser technique.

Both are good and I play both ways...
