Re: Drumming and tennis

I'm way into racquetball. The last time I played tennis I instinctively went for the back wall shot as the ball passed me only to launch it deep into the parking lot.

Seriously I have a hard time...

Re: How to stop playing slightly ahead of the beat?

I think this video may shed some light, or at least spur on more discussion.

As for your specific rushing/pushing ahead troubles, I try thinking...

Re: Chris Squire, Yes Bassist found dead

So sad, what a huge contribution he made! I'm thankful for all of the Yes music. Thanks Chris.

Re: Keeping Time doing a (buzz) roll as a fill

When playing a buzz roll in time the primary strokes underneath the buzz need to be in time. For a smooth buzz sound, 16th notes around 120-130 works well. When not in that tempo range, try to find...

Re: Any method for fast memorizing long and complex phrases

Good advice so far, but the main thing is repetition! Over and over and over again until it is insultingly easy to remember/recite/play etc.

Another thought, (and this may seem weird, but it's...

Re: Playing both hands in perfect unison

The key to playing clean double stops (unisons) is matching technique, velocity and stick height in each hand.

If one hand is using more fingers (usually the right) and the other more wrist...

Re: Master of Puppets with St Anger snare

It sounds like the snare is just coming through a room mike from 12 feet away. I like other things more.

Re: How does Gavin do this?

Gavin and the band were all clicked in for sure. AND, I'll bet that Gavin programmed the "click" with vocal cues for the band counting off the hits and such.

I saw him in clinic and he was talking...

Re: How does Gavin do this?

I noticed some talk of hairtas in his solo. There are the obvious ones he plays on his feet under the mini-chimes part, but then there's the cool variation at 2:53: his hands play the rlr, and then...

Re: Thoughts On Phil Collins??

Phil Collins is by far my biggest influence--he was my first drum hero as I was turned on to Genesis when I was in 6th or 7th grade. He was a monster drummer and that's still my favorite band of all...

Re: So should you never bounce doubles?

Hi CantStopIt021! Here's a video I did a while back for Modern Drummer on the double stroke which will explain my take: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bpfz1iGvbEM

There's a ton more thorough...

Re: Matched grip, yet my left hand is so sad...

Yes Grolubao, but the wrists can do the same function and just as well in German and American. I prefer American since the other options are readily available as well.

Re: seven stroke roll notation

In the case you're referring to it sounds like the seven stroke rolls will be one 8th note worth of triplets, that's the traditional application of the seven stroke roll. So yes, start on the "and"...

Matched grip, yet my left hand is so sad...

Hey guys, here's my latest www.drumworkout.com lesson video brought to you with some help from Vic Firth. I think you'll dig it and it'll help you stratergize strategeries on how to make your weak...

Re: stick keeps sliding in traditional grip

It sounds like you need to pinch a little bit more at the crotch of the thumb & first finger, that'll firm up the pivot point a bit. The trick is to learn how to squeeze a bit more there and not...

Re: "YYZ" and "Fool in the Rain" isolated drum tracks

It's really interesting just how far out of balance Neil's kit is mixed compared to how it'd sound acoustically. (Bass drum loud, snare soft, toms screaming loud). It works in the final mix though!

Speed & how to get it...

Hey guys, this started as a reply to another thread, but I figured I'd toss it in here as it may help some folks out. It's a note about speed and the most effective way I've found to get it:

If...

Re: My speed has stalled

If it helps, here's my philosophy on speed:

If you want to play fast, practice no faster than you can play perfectly and consistently with the next faster tempo's technique such that you teach...

For Jazz, The Art of Bop Drumming" by John Riley is great. My problem with using Ted Reed's "Syncopation" for jazz/triplet based stuff is that you'll never encounter the middle beat of the triplet...

Re: American Revolution: Everything Was Bad if the Drummers Were

I also see no reason for the snare drum to be associated with slavery. They've been used in war just about as far back as written history goes, if I remember correctly the earliest historical...

Re: German grip, which German?

I've been told that the grip names come from fencing styles (French and German that is). As for "American" grip, I think we just planted our flag on that one.
